A 6 year old car? Meh, tbh. I'd go indy unless you're anal about the dealer stamp.

My 8 year old Merc has until now a full Merc service history from new. I was thinking of keeping it with the dealer for the stamp in the book, but after they tried to con me on the last service (a few weeks ago), i've gone indy. I'll be keeping the car for another 2 years id say so when it comes time to sell it i'll be just flogging it on Donedeal or similar.

That said, keep receipts and a log of any works carried out.

    Main dealer under warranty.
Good reputable Indy for afterwards. Make sure they stamp your book and keep the receipts.

I have gotten BMW goodwill across a few cars now with that set up and even on cars that went straight to an Indy from the forecourt!

How did they try to con you out of interest?

How did they try to con you out of interest?

Every time, numerous bulbs had blown all of a sudden, despite the fact that when I dropped the car off that morning, no bulbs blown or warnings on the dash.

That's small things though, more a nuisance than anything.

What really p1ssed me off was that there was a rattle from the rear frame. Sounded tinny, just like a heat-shield. When the car was under warranty, I mentioned this to them and they replaced the diff balancer. Thought nothing more of it until some time after they did that work... I could still hear the rattle when I go over a pothole with the window open. Rang them up and they said "we'll sort it next time the car is up".
So, when it was up a few weeks ago I mentioned it to them and told them to sort it (assuming it'd be covered as I brought up the issue when under warranty). They had the cheek to demand 380 euro to replace the rear shoes! I politely declined. After I got the car back, I engaged / disengaged the hand-brake (auto so rarely do so) and viola, rattle gone!

This from a Merc main dealer in Dublin City... bad form. They also wanted 980 euro to replace the rear brake lines.... got an indy to do it for 200 yesterday.

Also, crazy price to change the fan belt.... 180 euro! Bought the belt myself for 47 + VAT and replaced it in about 10 mins with a 17mm socket on the auto-tensioner.

    The list goes on....

€980 for brake line sections is extortion! An independent could replace every solid brake line in the car for half that.

I'm guessing they labelled me as a gullible idiot and thought they'd try it on, despite the fact that being a typical young male I like my mechanicals and am quite competent (reason for going to dealer was for convenience) - Convenience can feck off, i'll give any jobs I don't want to do in future to my local reliable indy.

Byrne Motor Works are BMW specialists. Based in Swords (Feltrim Business Park - 01 808 4938) and I've used them a couple of times and found them very good to deal with.
