Restoring a vintage bike

I've acquired the attached 80's Claud Butler and while its in good working order I'd like over time to restore it a bit.... Some bits need attention and I promised the guy I bought it off I would take good care of it (he raced on it 30 years ago and I could tell it was important to him although he hadn't ridden it in years.... Physically unable I think)

Anyway a few questions if anyone can help me because I haven't much of a clue only that I would like to make the bike a better but at the same time respecting it and retaining as much of the original as possible

    1. The hubs are lovely campagnolo but the rims have seen better days.... I was thinking Mavic open pro and I have a neighbour who can build wheels. The spokes seem ok but if I'm changing the rims should I change the spokes as I'm at it?

    2. The paint work is tatty. What's best for this? Get it sandblasted and professionally re sprayed at a car detailing place? Decals from eBay?

    3. Parts cleaning. What's best to soak them, vinegar? Kerosene?

    4. Parts replacement. Where is best to source? eBay? Is there speciality shops online?

    5. The headset and handlebars have some lovely engraving.... What's the best way to buff these parts up.

Mechanically my aforementioned neighbour will be on hand to bale me out when I inevitably run into difficulty

Any advice would be greatly appreciated including any criticism, I'm not precious.

I'd say go ask the guys in the C&V ("Classic & Vintage") section of bikeforums.net. I've found that site to be a great source of information.

    Nice bike!

    Congratulations McTigs!

I had intended to buy it, so glad it went to a good home. The bike had an interesting history which hopefully you got too?

www.oldvelos.com will be a good home for your questions - you can find us on facebook also and hopefully you'll be able to ride the Oldvelos Vintage international Classic in Killarney on September 17th.

    Best wishes,

    Brendan
