I know there is a similar thread here ...: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057558934.....

..which I have checked out. As I did not want to hijack that thread, I hope you'll forgive me for starting a similar one. :)

My needs would be similar to the OP in the above thread..i.e general use, but I'm prepared to pay a bit more for a really good one. My budget would be around €400 to a max of €500.

At present I have a Dell desk top computer which has served me well, but now it's time to up grade. My knowledge of computers is VERY basic.

    Some questions :

    1. What should I look for ...e.g. lots of memory etc ?

    2. At present I have "McAfee" anti virus installed on my computer. The subscription ends in a few weeks. Should I renew, or opt for one of the free ones ?

    3. Would you recommend buying from a local store or on line ?

    4. What specific brands and models (in my budget range) would you recommend ?

Thanks... and again..sorry for posting a similar type thread to the one above. :)

I'm no computer genius but there is a sale on in PC World at he minute. I got a great HP laptop for 499. This included:

    -8GB of RAM
    -2TB hard drive
    -1GB of dedicated graphics
-8 hours of battery, it actually is true this time.
    -Windows 10 (I hate it)
    -A8 processor by AMD

My brother picked up another one for 569 except it had 2GB of dedicated graphics and an A10 processor. There's a few examples of this in that price range. If you can stretsch your budget by 70 it seems you are in another ballgame.

If there is a good deal instore I'd go for it, but personally I'd prefer to go online. With a sale on in PC World I'd lean towards going there, if your close to the border it would be worth your while looking at the prices up the north too.

What you'd be looking for is about a 750gb - 1tb hard drive, I would say 8gb of RAM preferably but 6gb would be grand as well.
If its for general use and a bit of coding a 15" screen at least is what you want, no need to worry about graphics.
Proccesor wise if you can grab an i3 do, if not an AMD a6/a8 would do, I haven't had a chance to look at the links for the laptops but they'd be the specs I'd look around for!
