Do I need a new derailleur ?

    Hi,

While cycling to work my gears stopped working with the front derailleur sliding down onto the front cog as shown by the big red arrow in slide.jpg. I tried sliding it back up off the cog and tightening the screw with an allen key but it wouldn't tighten. When I got home I removed the screw and it looks like there is a spring coming out of the derailleur (see spring.jpg, spring1.jpg). Is this normal ? Or is this 'spring' actually the internal thread that has been torn out of the derailleur (which would explain why the screw wouldn't tighten) ? The thread on the screw itself looks banjaxed (screw.jpg) but I'm not sure about the derailleur, do I need a new derailleur or just a new screw ?

    Thanks,

    Usjes.

That 'spring' looks very like a 'helicoil' thread insert and shouldn't come loose. Along with the damaged screw, I'd be inclined towards a new derailleur. Fortunately they're cheap enough...

Spring sits with the bolt for easy adjustment.

Looks like the derailleur and bolt are stripped of their treads....replacement derailleur is about 20-25 for this bike...a defy is it 8 speed.
