Timing Belt Renault Grand Scenic

Its recommended I get my timing belt done at 150k kms which I'm on now. I've priced a few garages and they seem to come in about €400 to get this done. I'm just wondering if I was to buy this myself and have my local indy do it, would I save much? I'm also confused about what I need. When I look on micksgarage a timing belt is €30, a belt kit is €86 and a belt kit with water pump is €138. Which one should I be getting? Does €400 sound like a lot to get it done? If I was to get it done locally how much should I expect to pay for labour? thanks

It would be belt kit with water pump.

But don't buy the parts without agreeing with garage that the will fit them for you.
It's unlikely you save any money as garage buys parts at trade prices.
Garages don't like to fit customers parts because there is very often variations and fitment issues with parts sourced from different places . The garage will not want to strip your car discover one of the parts is wrong and have it blocking one of their bays or lift to chase customer to get correct part.

Also timing belt changes are more labour than parts so you'll not save any money suppling parts and garage won't stand over your parts.

400 seems about right for timing belt

My indy charges me about €350 to replace the TB kit with pump on a Megane car so your quote of €400 doesn't sound far off. I always let him get the parts, I'd rather any mistake be his than mine.

That 400 euro quote is hardly from a main Renault dealer is it ?

I have a Renault Megane mk3 and when it was in getting serviced last I asked them as mine is fast approaching the 150k km and they said €550 tb + water pump all in. The only thing is the engine bay might be a bit bigger in the scenic possibly making it less labour intensive. I thought the €550 was a bit strong but not outrageous for a main dealer.

unless there is a massive difference in price not work supplying parts yourself for warranty reasons, if something fails who pays for strip down etc

I got a quote from a main dealer for €800 for t/b and pump change on my grand scenic. Needless to say I didn't go there. €400 isn't too bad, if you're in Dublin I went to a place called Pro Auto (I think) in Crumlin, I found them on Adverts, and they were very reasonable - less than €400.

The engine bay in a scenic is as snug as it gets, topping up oil is an ordeal.

Same as the Megane so same 1.5 engine even change the basic filters in them is hardship they are not too nice to work on in that respect.

Check ebay too, found the timing belt and water pump for my Mondeo much cheaper there for exact same part.

Petrol or diesel? If it's petrol, I'd change the hydraulic inlet camshaft pulley too. They nearly alway go after a belt change. (You start the car and it rattles like all hell for a few seconds).

If it's diesel, they're a little easier to work on, but either way 400 is pretty ok.
The Scenics take more work than the Meganes, as a lot of mechanics prefer to simply take away all the panelling and wiper gear ahead of the windscreen to acess the engine easier. Actually on some mount setups, that work is necessary..

No matter the engine though, you always want the belt kit (as it includes the very necessary idler pulleys/tensioners etc..) and the water pump, as it's run by the belt and thus under the same tension.

Have just come across this site who are quoting 300 inc vat. I don't live in Dublin but that seems a very good price. Anyone ever heard of them?
