"A Spanish civil servant has been fined €27,000 (£21,000; $30,000) after not going to work for "at least" six years.
Joaquin Garcia's absence was only noticed when he became eligible to collect a long-service award.
The 69-year-old, whose job was to supervise the building of a waste water treatment plant, has since retired."

I particularly like "He denied the allegations and said he was a victim of bullying"

He must have saved thousands in missing all those whip-arounds for colleagues birthdays, leaving presents, kris kindles...

I know a woman here (teacher) that's basically been off work on full pay for 4 years. Well timed maternity leave and sick leave!

I never contribute to those. I keep my money for myself and my family. Never spent a penny on colleagues and don't expect them to spend anything on me.

Obviously a man who takes lunchtime seriously. I like his style.

Quite so indeed. The invariably overweight, obviously unstable women who come bouncing around to my office looking for money for someone who is leaving/getting married/having their appendix out get The Stare.

Explain how you could do that? both sick leave and the way maternity leave is calculated for teachers has changed.

It can be structured that way.

26 weeks paid maternity leave + accrued and unused annual leave + public holidays during maternity leave.

It's something that involves having your child at the beginning of the Summer, so the teacher in essence gets all of that summer time "back" at the end of her maternity leave and misses an entire school year. Then she's ready to pop again the following June or September.

well if you get pregnant once a year that is 26 weeks plus if time it so that the 26 weeks is taken in term time and you have a month or two of illness that is pretty much all of the year.

Public holidays haven't been added to maternity leave in years and full pay for sick leave is restricted to 92 days in a rolling year. Zero pay after 183 days sick in any four year rolling period.

that is still 7.5 months a year plus holiday entitlements. and you can always take unpaid maternity leave to make up the rest of the school year.

It a minor point but the original post was about someone who was paid while on six years sick leave stretching you maternity leave by taking unpaid leave is a different thing entirely.
