What's the "normal" sound of a 1.2tsi engine?

I'm not an engine buff so hoping to find one here. What does a normal, healthy 1.2tsi engine sound like?

As someone who is familiar with the sound of engines like the 1L in the old K10 Micra, or the 2L in a Honda Stream, should a 1.2TSI from a Volkswagen group engine sound vastly different with various noises going on?

I stood at one yesterday with the bonnet up thinking "that sounds really raspy", but I'm wondering if that's how they normally sound.

This is vague. Even for boards it's a vague question

Considering the Stream engine would be far quieter than the Micras, the TSi can't sound like both? It might sound like one or the other or totally different but I really cannot grasp what answer you're looking for

Like an old 1997 1.0 3cycl Corsa - chain whirring, sewing machine noise.
Tickticktick noise is a bit more pronounced compared to the Corsa due to direct injection. So more of a diesel sound to it.

I think he is politely implying that the 1.2tsi sounds like a ball of sh1te once it has any mileage on it.

I was a little harsh on the Corsa 3cyl 12v - it probably sounds better than a 1.2tsi with a bit of mileage

Vrmmm Vrmmm, mmmmm, mmmmm, Vrmmm, is probably the best way to describe it.

    Does it sound like this:

That youtube fella seems to have found issue with it...

they can suffer from cam chain stretching I believe (they went back to a belt in later models afaik), which might explain the youtube video above

wouldnt have characterised it as raspy though..!

that's not a bad description. Thanks.

Yes, a bit of diesel to it on startup (bonnet closed).

It's quite funny, the quieter VAG diesels get, the noisier their petrols become.
ok, so a "noisy" VAG petrol isn't unusual?

This might be even more vague and ignorant than my original post. But when did petrol engines get noisy?

(Folks I really am sorry for how stupid my original post seems, by the way. Sincerely appreciate any enlightenment!)

Some engines have REALLY noisy timing chains, especially if they are engineered from metal used in jewellery sold by street hawkers.*

Direct injection generally sounds nasty compared to old style mixing of fuel+air and sucking it into the cylinder.

It sounds terrible when it goes wrong - carbon build up on intake valves makes it even more noisy.

*it's possible that the metal is fine but the chain tensioner is completely inadequate.

it's not unusual, but that doesn't mean it's ok.

And here was me thinking that all petrols sound like thunder in paradise!

sometimes you could just let the petrol diesel thing go, really.

a poorly engineered engine will sound **** whether it be petrol or diesel.

If a VW Tsi sounds rattly, don't buy it - end of.

They are great when they work but really horrid when they go wrong.

The rattle / knock could be either (as was said) the timing chain loosening or a problem with the supercharger vacuum valve (more serious) or charger (middle serious).

Any will cost a lot to fix.

Neighbour has a 1.2 TSI Roomster. Doesn't sound any different to your average four cylinder petrol (which is to say it shouldn't sound anything like a 1.0 litre Corsa or 1.2 NA Polo/other VW Group product as those have three cylinder engines and the Corsa in particular makes a sewing machine sound as the miles pile on). So if it's really loud or sounds like a sewing machine, I'd say there's something wrong with it. A properly running one is a fraction louder and less refined sounding than a standard four cylinder petrol because of the direct injection, but you'd want to be listening very closely to really notice the difference compared to a standard petrol engine.

Wife has a 2010 Seat Leon 1.2 tsi.
When we bought it of the dealer and when she had it serviced by them the noise issue was mentioned but we were told that it was korma and fine.
Chain eventually stretched causing the valves and pistons to meet.
Two weeks later the repair bill was around €1200 (negotiated down from €1600).

VW swear every component on those engines has received as much or more testing than any of their other engines and are fit for the life of the engine having come through a "baptism of fire".

    Lolz.

Our 2013 1.2TSI Yeti was great but it didn't do huge mileage and was looked after like a baby. We've just replaced it with another.

Incidentally the old one was sold for sticker price before it hit the forecourt.

VW also said that their diesel engines were not rigged and now look where they are!

If they 'swear by that' then it's an implied warranty and they need to replace any failed engine.

I'm not holding my breath. :)
