I keep my bike sparkling, well at least the frame is but I just can't get the gunk off my chain or cogs. Can anyone recommend a good degreaser that I can use in my chain cleaning tool or should I use separate cleaners on the chain and gearing?

    Thanks

I use stuff from the motor factor, jizer is good too, also from the motorfactor, I get a gallon of it for the price of a bottle of the stuff in the bike shop. A lot of that stuff is water soluble too, so you know once you wet the chain it stops being degreaser, and there is no fear of it rendering your chain lube useless. Stick it in the chain cleaner, rip it around for a bit to get the worst of it off. Then I get an old tooth brush in a coffee jar of fairly hot water and get any stubborn bits of grease and build up off. The heat works good at removing any grease that degreaser alone doesn't shift. I also use that technique for cleaning the cassette and jockey wheels

If you're in a jam you can use anything like petrol, diesel or kerosene, all of it will clean the grime off the chain

I use an engine degreaser I got in an auto factors,
can't recall its name, but much more cost effective than specific bike degreaser,
Any auto factors will have something suitable,
Think I paid less than 20 euros for 5 litres,
Will keep you going for years,

Best degreaser I have ever used is SOC motorbike degreaser available in a spray bottle from any good motorcycle shop. Incredibly efficient and water soluble so it can be sprayed off with a water hose. Cleans all old old and sprocket gunk completely. Chain and sprockets always look like new.

I also use an automotive degreaser. Far cheaper than most cycling specific stuff. I get it in my local hardware. The brand name is Carplan - it rinses off with water. I pour it into my trusty Lidl chain cleaner contraption. Regularly, I remove the cassette and clean it. I've posted the pic below before but I'll post it again to illustrate the result. The chain and cassette in the pic had about 4 - 4,500kms on it at the time.

    And the degreaser.....

Also use jizer, name aside its cheap as chips and does the job nicely.

Citrus degreaser cleans well and degrades better after use.

    Diesel.

After use pour dirty diesel into container. Dirt will eventually settle at bottom and pour off clean diesel. Reuse again and again..

Also acts as a lubricant as well as a cleaner..
