Seem a few ads with this in the description on Donedeal. They seem to be for Japanese imports only. Is it some sort of scam?

Im sure its just a case that the original owners havent had a chance to transfer legal title to the guy that stole their cars and shipped them to Europe.

They'd have had to pay customs on entering Europe no?

Sometimes it can be the Jap paperwork never came through/got lost.

There was a load of Jap cars at the port, That couldn't be sold/registered. (Stuff like Skylines, Subarus and a Merc or 2)

Are they the kind of cars that would be used for track days?

Probably completely unrelated but there was a story on here before about a load of cars that are stuck in limbo in Dublin port rusting away because the paperwork was lost.

Not unrelated at all, you're spot on.

Some guy bought the lot of them, and has advertised them all on donedeal.

They can't ever get paperwork here. They're in a weird sort of limbo, for reasons I don't fully understand.

Some guy selling I think 5 of these. Has something Revenue wise being signed so they can never be registered here or what?

I vaguely remember the details of this - the short version is that an Irish dealer paid the Japanese agent 50% upfront with the balance to be paid when they arrived in Ireland. The cars were shipped from Japan but by the time they arrived here the Irish dealer had gone bust and the paperwork for the cars was never sent over and, therefore, customs couldn't clear them. They sat at the port for years without moving up until recently when someone worked out a deal to buy the whole lot. He's since advertised most of them on DoneDeal, seems to have sold a few but not of the nicer ones (SL500, Supra, RX-7, etc.). As far as I know it's impossible to register any of them for road use here.

But I wonder what happens if they get registered in another EU country and then someone buys one and tries to bring it back. I don't see why there's an issue just here, you would imagine it would be any country and in theory the vehicles would be flagged as stolen seeing as final payment has not been made? You would also think that in or around the standard Ireland to Japan shipping price of about €800 each that they would have just been shipped back?

Since Ireland has no car manufacturers it's relatively easy to register imports here, at one stage all JDM cars in the UK took a spin on an Irish port till the UK government figured that they where loosing to much tax. A friend of mine had a lot of hassle registering an Irish bike in the UK. I can't see many other European countries that would be easy to register vehicles which don't have any documentation, especially ones who have domestic manufacturers.

But it would be no easier to register them in any other country, they still have no paperwork.

How much have written off JDM performance wrecks gone up in value since these came on the market?

Cheers for all the replies. Some interesting links there too. I'd say the more desirable cars from that consignment found a tax book and some plates easily enough.

A breakers yard is most likely result for those.
    Otherwise a container to Africa.

Most likely end up as drift cars, or exported (it seems paperwork can be sorted via Japan auction company). They could be driven on trade plates here either ...not a long-term solution though :D

If the paperwork could be sorted, you'd imagine it would have been.

I was just reading the ads they say 'BUT CAN ONLY BE REGISTERED OUTSIDE IRELAND'and you can apply for paperwork through the auction site.
Does this mean they could be registered in england and then brought back to ireland.
The other thing is if you bought one as a track car what would be the situation with customs, could they seize the car on you.

all vehicles coming into the country are liable to VRT, so in theory a track car should be VRTd even if it never touches the road. No idea how they'd assess the VRT though.

Trade plates do not preclude you from having a NCT I imagine

They haven't at all. None of these cars are particularly interesting enough for anyone to bother with TBH.
