Nikon SB900 flash and such like.

    What are these flashes needed for.Is the built in flash on a dslr not enough?
    Any advice welcome as am a newbie to photography.

    No, it's not enough unless you're taking a photo of something just in front of you that can handle direct flash (I always find it funny when folk try to take a photo of something 100m away with the inbuilt flash). A good flash like the SB900 can light up something quite a distance from you, and the head rotates in pretty much every direction, providing offset/indirect lighting. You can even fire the flash off the camera completely. Also, you can gather a bunch of flashes in a master-slave setup so that you can provide e.g. omnidirectional lighting.

    A directional head also allows you to bounce the flash off a white ceiling which still lights a subject but reduces the washed out look.
