Just out of curiosity can someone for sure tell me what happens if you by a car that hasnt been taxed in say a year or even 2 is the new owner liable for the back tax?

Same with nct, say the nct on a car is out 3 years, do you get a fresh 2 year cert from the date of the test?

im hearing so many diff stories on these its unreal lol

You are only liable for tax from the start of the month you bought the car.
Nct is issued to the first registration date of the car so that needs to be established first.

    What year is the car,
What exact date did the test run out ?
Example if the car is over 10 years old and last test ran out in July of any given year, if you got it tested tomorrow, it would only be valid till July. If however you were within 90 days of the date on the cert, for example if it ran out in april.
You would get a cert to April year - 14 months.
If it's less than 10 years old it will be alittle different.

I dont have a car im referring to im just curious as im looking at buying another diy doer upper car and some havent been taxed in some cases 3 or 4 years lol This time I want to keep it as a second runabout so want to have it taxed an tested so just wanted to know the right story with the tax and nct

So in your case if it was way out of the 90 days says months and months on a car over 10 year old would you just be as well to wait till july time again and have a full 12 months?tks

Yep. Wait till you are within 90 days of the anniversary date and you will get 1 year plus the number of days that you are early.
