Cancelling driving test for 3rd time

My wife is due to do her driving test next week but hasn't got any lessons in since last cancellation and is no way ready to do her test.

I know from the RSA website that she'll lose the deposit if she cancels for the 3rd time but she thinks she'll have to resit the theory test too. I'm not sure about this since the RSA website only mentioned the loss of deposit on cancellation.

    Can anyone help clarify?

    Thanks in advance!

No, she will not have to resit the theory test. That would only happen if her learner permit had been expired for five years.

Update - according to my wife, if she cancels the test, she'll only get a provisional license renewal for 6 months whereas if she goes in and fails it she'll get a license renewal for the normal 2 years.

Can anyone confirm this one? I'm not sure if "failing" includes telling the examiner before the test that she's really not ready to do the exam!

If she cancels the test she'll get a 1-year learner permit. She's right in that if she fails a test she'll get a 2-year one. Don't tell the tester anything about being ready or otherwise - eyes-forward, follow instructions, pass/fail as appropriate.

Remember that unless she currently holds her first learner permit (with the 991 notation) then she will have to have a valid test booking OR a test outcome (failure) cert to renew her permit when the time comes.

If this is her first ever learner permit then she can renew and get her second permit (992 notation) without providing a test outcome cert or a test booking.

If she does currently hold a learner permit with a 992 or a 993 notation and she decides to cancel her test booking, she will effectively have to go and make a new application for a driving test prior to renewing her permit anyway.

As Jimgoose has stated, it seems either way she's better off sitting the test and failing. She'll gain the experience of being under test conditions as well as coming away with a cert that gives her a 2 year permit instead of 1.
