    Hey guys,

So i was just driving in the morning today and the engine light came on (http:// postimg.org/image/metnxs40x/) Any idea what this means? My car is a Ford Mondeo 2004 model.

I recently bought this car for very cheap (almost free). At that time there was a strange noise coming from the brakes plus the engine light was also on (same as in the pic above). I took it for repairs and spend quote a bit to stop the noise coming from the brakes plus also asked them to fix why the engine light was on since i was going for an NCT at that time.

I went for the NCT and passed it, now after a month the engine light is on again.. What does it mean? And is there anything i can do myself to get rid of this?

Sorry i dont really know much about cars and i dont want to go to the service shop for something minor (if it is minor that is).

Buy a code scanner and plug it in. It should tell you why the EML is on.

You can also try this trick, may or may not work - and probably won't give a fault code. But hey, it's free
    1) With the ignition switched off press and hold the trip computer reset button.
    2) Switch the ignition on.
    3) Release the reset button
    4) The above will be displayed with each press of the button.
    5) To exit this mode switch the key off. When you switch it back on again the dash will return to normal.

    Functions
    1 Gage Test
    2 Dial Test
    3 Bulb Test
    4 Diagnostic Check
    5 Diagnostic Check
6 Clock Type (shows ?date 44? if UK)
    7 Diagnostic Check
    8 Speed MPH
    9 Speed KPH
    10 Revs
    11 Fuel
    12 Engine Type
    13 Temp of Engine
    14 Battery Voltage
    15 Diagnostic Check
    16 LCD Display

Thanks.. But i dont know much about cars so apologies if the below questions seem a little stupid :)

    1. How much does a code scanner cost and where can i get it?
    2. Where is the trip computer reset button?
    3. Didnt get your point. 4

It's ok, you posted in DIY so now you have to learn about your car :)

You can get a code scanner online (amazon, ebay or http://www.adverts.ie/for-sale/q_obd2+scanner/) but maybe get one at a motor factors or Halfords. Just tell them what car you have and they should give you the right one and possibly show you how it works.

I have a ELM327 Wifi for €15 that I connect to my iphone using these free apps

Here's a video about the test - start with this

As above, get yourself a code scanner, I bought an UltraGauge II which I've used on maybe a dozen cars (mostly Fords) since I bought it. That or a friendly local garage man might plug in his for a pack of biccies and a cupp'o'scald. You'll read off the code, and google it. If it's intermittent, it could be emissions-related.
My Puma threw P0420 about once a month, and eventually stopped squeeking through its NCT. I tried every cheap fix in the book (fuel additives, running it up to temperature), but had to cave and fit a new Catalytic converter. I used a cheap Ebay one, which lasted 18 months, which I suspect given your car's age is what might work for you too. If you want it to last, spend 3/4 times the money for a genuine part. If you can afford to, get a grown-up to fit it, I spent bloody ages doing it myself.
