Can I hide some transactions names on bank statement for social welfare?

I have to submit 3 months bank statements to social welfare. I'm wondering if I can cross out the names of some transactions? Leaving the money obviously, I just don't particularly want them to know what I've been spending my money on.

I work 3 days a week and get a cheque from DSP for the other 2 days. I received application forms in the post to fill out again, they are checking up and re-assessing everything I suppose.

In the last 3 months someone close to me has been very sick. I didn't deal with it particularly well and spent a lot of time in the pub. So my bank statement is littered with transactions from my local, as well as quiet a few from a local late bar. Things are looking up now, she is recovering thankfully, and I've stopped drinking, but I don't really want them seeing the dozens of transactions for booze on my statement.

Everything is above board otherwise, I'm not hiding anything really, but I wouldn't mind a bit of privacy on some of the transactions.

It would not be a good idea to blank out names ect,the dept will not be judging you or interested in what you spend your money on.They will treat your details privately and in confidence so relax and don't worry.

It's nothing unusual to them, they're concerned about money coming into your account, not where it goes out. Crossing them out would probably raise suspicion! Don't stress, and I'm glad your family member is on the mend!

I ran across something in Citizens Information that strongly implied that a substance abuse problem was taken into account as a reason why you might be especially needy at the moment. I'm not saying you have one, just that it's not a strike against you.

Getting cash back in a pub rather than queueing at an openair ATM is wise. Matt Talbot was known to pop into Mulligans for an orange juice and 50 back before he raised hell about drunken louts.

Some of the above is lies but there is a grain of truth.

And yes...it's not a job interview - they only look for evidence of hidden larger feeder accounts on the statement - ie. opening balance €2.50 -> €15,000 in, ->boring transactions - > closing balance....€50. Funny that 15k innit ?

It's the numbers not the names that are scanned.

Hay there just a question to ask. If someone is drawing job seekers allowance and asked for 6montus bank statements and statements show "cheque withdrawal" would you be required to prove who these cheques were payable to?

No really they are interested in what lodgements are showing rather than what you spend your money on.

So the fact that I withdrew my money in a draft format and closed the avcount shouldn't concern them? There was no other monies went into the account before I closed it anyway.

Another question - the inspector also took my drivers license number!!! Why on earth would he want my drivers license - my girlfriend is a named driver on my insurance can he check this

I doubt he can check, but what does it matter if he does?

I used to work there. Your only requirement is to give a balance statement. It is common just to have a credit Union statement.

As for the driver's licence you're over thinking it, just for id

Oh yes he took it for photo ID ok.

I've been honest with him I told him I spent all the money that I had since the last time we met in which he was surprised so he wants a copy of my statements which I have no problem in giving him it shows all the money I spent. And it shows that I've closed my accounts. The last two tx show "cheque withdrawal" on my account - could he ask what these cheques were payable to?

Closing an account after draft withdrawals raises the possibility that the money has been moved elsewhere so you will need to address that by showing what became of the money.

Thanks amtc - the statements show two cheque withdrawals I gave these two cheques to my girlfriend will he want to know who these cheques are payable to and why - her car was 15 years old and she needed a new one - will he request copies of these drafts in which I debited my account or is he only concerned with lodgements

It would depend on the amount in question.
If you are looking for a means tested payment, having given away money you could have used to support yourself, that may cause an issue.
