    Anyone give me some ideas on buying my first car,
    Price range is about 3500 all in!

    There are a few S Class Mercs as well as the usual Micras going for under 3500. :D

    After insurance and tax, that leaves you with €40 for the car and €10 for petrol to get it home.

    Not being smart, that's the reality sadly.

    Insurance and tax don't have to be paid up front for the whole year

    I think a 1 litre car,small(easy to park etc) road tax not too high for old tax regime and reliable, I recommend a 2001 Toyota yaris ,cost 1000euro or more with low mileage, these are 4 cylinder,tough engine,less trouble than the newer 3 cylinder ones(2006).
