Virgin Media - speed / connection issues

We are virgin customers at the end of our tether.

We supposedly have 240mb. We've got a technicolor modem, TC7200U - got it two and half years ago when we joined. We have the virgin phone line plugged into it.

We have a four port Ethernet switch plugged into it; there is a cable running to the Xbox and one to the Skype cordless phone.

When I run a speed test with an Ethernet cable, I get anywhere from 85mb to 97mb down.

The OH gives out that his Xbox live games are very slow.

His iPad frequently fails to load websites, or if they load, they're consistently slower than loading them on 3G (Ive got a sim in mine but I've tested it by switching off mobile data). This is sitting beside the modem in the living room.

We've tried adding TP link wifi boosters, but it hasn't helped. I've also tried changing the channel but again, no improvement.

    What are we doing wrong?

Its operating at 100Mb not 1000Mb(gigabit) so you probably bought a 10/100 switch or one of the cables isn't up to doing gigabit. Either way this wont cause a delay gaming, even if it was only 10/10 you could game just fine. If its an Xbox360 it cannot go higher than 100Mb(90Mb in practice).

Page loads could just be wifi, is it an apartment or terraced house?

What speed is the ethernet switch? Fast ethernet, Gigabit.......

What speed is your NIC on the pc which your testing this???

What is the ping speed when you are performing these speed tests???

What wifi enabled devices are connecting to this network? i.e. 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac

You might be better off in getting a Wifi access Point, disable the radio on the Virgin box and have this radio provide Wifi access...

    Ok, things I know (hopefully).

    It's a gigabit switch

Our laptops wifi connections only go up to 100mb, so even if it was going above 100mb, I won't know - I'd just be delighted to keep himself happy.

    It's an Xbox one.

How do I tell what the NIC and whether it's a 802.11 a/b/g/n/a?

It's an apartment - one long row of apartments, one on bottom, one on top, side by side (no neighbours below us, just one above). That's why I played around with the channels first.

    Changing to 5ghz didn't help.

Warning, I'm not very PC literate but I'm head of domestic IT (IE ive got more of a clue than my husband but not much)

Oh, the ping varies between 8 to 24ms

The wifi adapt or on the laptops mention 801 n

I changed it to 5ghz and the Xbox and the iPads zoomed along quite well. The laptops stopped altogether. Looked into it - our laptops are almost three years old and can only support 2.4ghz. The VM supplied modem doesn't support dual channel.

    Any suggestions.
