    Hi there,
    The other day my daughter hit her head off my front tooth, my mouth was actually closed but still got a good bang (she was completley fine). Was quite sore but nothing too crazy pain went away after a while. But that night it was throbbing-not really throbbing in pain just throbbing. I of course Googled it and came across thing about nerves being damaged and sign of your tooth dieing. This was on Monday it still feels odd like slightly sore /odd I just feel very away of it like a very very slight constant pain. Is there anything a dentist could do if my tooth is dieing? I know with decay there is a root canal?! Any advice or info would be much appreciated. I will be so devastated if it turns black :-(

    Hi there.
    If the tooth was not obviously moved by the trauma then there are 2 big possibilities;
    Root fracture, this is unlikely given the nature of the trauma
    Concussion of the tooth. This can cause minor trauma to the ligament around the tooth and in some cases can result in the tooth losing vitality. This is rarer in a concussion injury than an injury that moves the tooth in its socket.
    Best advice is to se your dentist
    In the meantime, monitor the colour of the tooth, pain and any swellings in the gum above the tooth.

    As you have described things, there is nothing a dentist can do to prevent the tooth dying if thats the way its going... but it is best to have the dentist monitor things than you...

    I banged my own front tooth recently, I know what you are thinking.....!!

    Thank you so much for your reply. It's good to hear what it may be....fingers crossed it will be OK. I am going to ring my dentist. If it does die what would be the best thing to do a veneer? Thanks again!

    A dead tooth needs either a root canal treatment or an extraction!

    If a dead tooth becomes dark then internal bleaching can be done to lighten it or as you say a veneer or crown ...

    Hopefully you will need none of these things

    How old is your daughter ?
    This will have a big bearing on what can be done with the tooth.
    Sorry misread the post , thought it was your daughter that damaged her tooth. Agree with Oral Surgeon. Hope you got it sorted.
