    Hi

can anyone recommend a satellite broadband supplier - we have tried all other options, had every supplier out checking line of site etc and have tried all the dongles that Vodafone, Three & o2 could give us and nothing has worked.

so our very last option is satellite so I need recommendations / or not - from people who have actually used the service.

am in the north wexford area,

    thanks in advance

I used satellite in the past and would not go back to it. It's too expensive, unreliable and limited to be of any use for a modern internet connection. It doesn't matter which provider, it's the technology that sucks.

I would seriously go back to dial-up before I would go with satellite again.

How far are you from your local telephone exchange?

Have you checked all of the fixed wireless operators covering your location? You can find the full list here if you drop the marker on your house and tick Wireless ISPs option.

You didn't mention meteor in your list of mobile providers. There are only three actual mobile networks in the country (Vodafone, Three(O2) and Meteor).

Hiya thanks for responding - we actually have very little mobile coverage in the house - have to sit on a windowsill upstairs to get any coverage at all - no 4g - our house is in a complete blackspot and as for the fixed wireless operators - between us and our neighbours we have had most of the ones on the list out to us - they cant even get a signal. the others wont even come out to check as they know the situation. we are 7.5km from our nearest exchange

we have exhausted every one of the options you mention - we have eircom (1.5mb supposedly) and it is useless - it takes days for anything to download. I cant even open an attachment on an email.

our last option really is satellite - how long ago was it that you had it?

Sounds like you may be a prime candidate for an elevated 3G modem. Other posters have done this before by putting the modem in a weatherproof box, putting it on a pole and erecting it. An extra 20ft of elevation can give you perfect line of sight.

It's not much use to you but my mother uses Westnet in Mayo. She gets around 3mb download speeds for around 40 quid per month. There are alot of people using the broadband in the house and they have never complained about it. So from her point of view, satellite broadband works fine.

Westnet isn't satellite broadband, it is FWA also. And they indeed offer a great service. Parents use for running company in remote area of Mayo and also use it for Netflix daily, no complaints.

Might even be possible to get 4G with external aerial up on a pole?

Possibly. There's some science two how long your antenna can be that goes beyond my knowledge but in theory it should work too.
