Can I ask if you can check in to a public mental hospital without G.P referral? If so, what's your experience been like?

You can present to your local A&E if you're concerned for your safety, and be assessed by an on-duty psychiatrist. They can then either admit you, refer you on to a community service, or discharge you. In terms of going to a psychiatric (not mental) hospital, from what I can gather, a referral form needs to be sent by a GP (or perhaps an A&E psychiatrist), in order to arrange for a psychiatric evaluation.

Most psychiatric hospitals have websites with referral / admission procedures listed. Where is your local public psychiatric hospital?
