GERD - Stretta non invasive surgery

    Hi Guys,

I have been suffering very bad with GERD/LPR the last 2 years. Its gotten to the stage where I can't sleep and my quality of life has gotten worse.

I was researching online and there appears to be a newish non invasive treatment for Reflux diseases. I was considering getting the Nissen Fundoplication surgery but this seems like its worth a try as the NF surgery seems to have a long recovery rate.

The only problem is that they do not do it in Ireland and has only recently been introduced in the UK. I have looked up videos such as news reports in the US and it seems to be quite successful. At the same time I am a bit skeptical as I cannot find many patient reviews from the clinic that does it in the UK.

Has anyone else heard of this or knows anyone that has had it done?

    :)

I'm presuming you've seen your GP or a gastroenterologist and tried one of the PPIs like omeprazole?

They've largely supplanted the Nissen fundoplication for all but the most severe cases of GERD.

I have tried omeprozole and lanzaprozole but seeing no results. I am going for an xray soon and will see what options i have after that

That's extremely strange. PPIs are one of those meds that usually just 'work' for almost everyone. They may not eliminate the problem completely but they should make a huge difference in reducing symptoms. If it's your GP prescribing them I'd ask to make sure you're on an adequate dosage and for a referral to a gastro. Tbh I'd exhaust all the options before even considering surgery.

Yes I will see what I can do. I'm not really suffering from heartburn, but I am feeling lump in my throat along with lots of mucus/phlegm, nausea and temporary pain in chest after a few hours of eating.

    Have you seen a doc?

I know that you can get PPIs over the counter nowadays but for something like this you might need a higher dose and that's something you'd need to check with a doctor. I have awful reflux and I'm on a whacking dose of Lansoprazole which controls it very well. Something else to consider might be IBS if the nausea and bloating are particularly bad after meals.

Motillium is available over the counter at the chemists and I find it very good to help with nausea and that awful feeling of food just 'sitting' in your chest.

You should seek medical advice on this - a gastroenterologist would be the best bet to see - they should be able to help you.
