There are three ways I can get my Pug serviced:

    - Go to an official maintenance garage in the back of a Pug dealer
    - Go to one of the big name servicing garages that have depots all over the country
    - Go to a 'Mom & Pop' garage

For things like a pre-NCT, or a service where a part is needed, which is likely to be the most economical option? Is there anything to be said for Mom & Pop garages?

How old is the car? If it's out of warranty a good independent garage might be the best option?

The car is an 08. When you say independent garage, do you mean a small local garage? Why would that be cheaper, especially around getting parts?

    Yes.

They buy parts at trade prices, and tend to be significantly better value on labour than a main dealer.
