    Hi all...
Im organising a charity cycle, and wanted to know what are the benefits (if any) of running it through/in conjunction with a CI registered club ?

I think insurance is an obvious one. Clubs have a wealth of experience in organising events and would probably think of things you wouldn't. Clubs have loads of contacts and a lot would have built up good will over the years.

You would also get an indication from CI of the requirements that your local Gardai and authorities would need.

You can borrow the safety car, you can hire radios, wealth of contacts as Captain said who would know the requirements, offer assistance, have experience with such rides as well as have routes that may have already been well checked safety wise.

re. Insurance, yeh thats the tricky one.....
If you do it through a CI registered club, and the insurance is through CI, dont all cyclists have to be ci members ?

You can get a one day license for non members as far as I know.

There is quite a process to go through - see here for more info

Once you have submitted management plan/risk assessment CI should hopefully approve the event - that will allow you (as organisers) as well as participants (using the 1 day licences as mentioned by Cram, to the extent required) to benefit from CI insurance.

Quite a process and in my opinion a good one as these are things that an organiser should be doing anyway, although there are some down the country that just go ahead and do it, and have a policy of see no evil, hear no evil.

Would not want to be in a position of authority (committee member or event organiser) of any club that does not follow CI procedures. That could leave them personally liable if anything does go wrong.

I am not talking about CI clubs, more the likes of a GAA club, someone comes up with an idea of running it as a fundraiser and just picks a date, has a few marshalls and goes for it, not an ambulance in sight.

Its rare enough (I hope) but it does happen, my old GAA club done it last year, short enough spin but they had a large crowd from what my mother tells me and I was talking to one of the organisers when I bumped into him awhile later, who looked at me as if I had two heads when I mentioned my limited knowledge of such things, he laughed and thought me foolish when I mentioned insurance, shure people ride on their bikes ion the road anyway, what the difference?

No way would i run a cycle without insurance.
I hope my club agree to 'run/support' the cycle...

You should also think about running a 10km cycle too for families, that is a good one as draws family out and makes more money for the cause.

That is true, but trying to get marshalls for an 80km loop is tough enough, without the hassle (and extra insurance cost) of the getting more for a family spin ....
    Maybe 'next time' ! :p

Our club ran a charity cycle last year for a local cause, we had a 100km, 50km and a 15km and raised €33K from it. A lot of work but worth it.

Oh that's different, our club has 45 members but we made a committee with 8 of us and there was 8 of us doing all the work and there was so much work.

I dont know ! They just requested that Waterford city and council are indemnified from the event, and they want to see the policy !!

    Is this common practice??

Yes - we have to get this whenever we put on an event or indeed if we want to hire council property for a committee meeting (although one letter will cover us for a series of meetings throughout the year)

is it a flat rate of €60 ? I mean , can you add in more than place ? ie. the gaa club that 'might' be our start/finish might have to indemnified also? Or would their own insurance cover that ??
(sorry about the stupid questions, havent had to deal with insurance/red tape , or C.I , before!)

Every time you need to get a letter from CI confirming a specific counterparty is indemnified there is a standard fee of €60 for each counterparty indemnified.

Local authorities now seem to ask for this as a matter of course.

The GAA club could ask for it - their own insurance may only cover for GAA related activities for example. Equally they may never have even thought of asking .... Ultimately CI does provide adequate Public Liability cover, so there is no need to "volunteer" these letters if they are not requested.
