Currently after an estate and due to financial constraints it's got to be a bit older. Really like the look of the Audi A4 B6 Avant which have aged really well imo.

However I know next to nothing about them. All I know is the 1.8T can be trouble with sludge problems so will prob stick with Diesel (though I have never owned a Diesel in 19 years of driving).

What are the Diesel engines like? Also I see some have quattro - is this an advantage or disadvantage?

Finally Auto or Manual? I just want a car that is hassle free as possible - though I do all the diy work myself currently.

Currently running one of these, mine has covered circa 270k kms and runs sweet. The 1.9 is well proven if a tad agricultural.. Look for an awx engine code which is the 130bhp. Hauls nice at at motorway speeds. Can get anywhere between 800 -1000 + kms to a tank, varied driving.

On the downside suspension is getting tired and needs an overhaul.

Service history is key. Make sure its had scheduled servicing : Cambelt etc.

Stay away from the auto / multitronic they have well documented issues.

Quattro is rare in 1.9 more easily found in the V6 version.

All in all a good jammer.... But most will now have intergalactic milage. So be wary of ones that may have been clocked !
