What would you recommend between a 1.6 and a 2.0 Diesel. Looking at passat and octavia. Have driven a 1.6 and a 2.0 Diesel passat se. Didn't notice a huge difference but didn't get a chance to open up on motorway where I assume there would be a difference.

Currently drive a 1.4 petrol that on its last legs. Weekly drive is commute is 240km with monthy 300km drive on the motorway every 2 or 3 months.

Not really worried about power, more reliability and low maintenance. The milage is prob on low side for a diesel so any advantage of a 1.6 over a 2.0?

They are both from the same family of engines so reliability will be similar from both. In a car the size and weight of a Passat the 2.0 litre will be way superior to the 1.6 litre. Fuel economy of the 2.0 litre will not be any worse than the 1.6 litre but the extra grunt of the 2.0 litre especially for motorway driving will be a lot better for overtaking and cruising.

But with only doing 240km per week you really have to ask yourself if a diesel car is really suitable?

You know that availability of anything with decent equipment and petrol engine is modest at best in second hand market.

Fortunately VAG does 1.2, 1.4 and 1.8 petrols in majority of their cars, if buying a new Octavia I'd personally get a 1.2 for it. They usually come with a free gift - around 125KM ;)

Thanks Bazz.. Yes I was very much inclined to go for petrol initially. I did spend a good bit of time last year and couldn't get something I was happy with. Very frustrating looking for a decent petrol. Since then I have been looking at diesels.

My daily round trip two 20/25km drives so I was thinking this is not too detrimental to a diesel?

1.6 VW 105hp diesel is woefully underpowered. I had one in a Passat and found that in winter when heating the car and summer when cooling the car, the draw on the engine was bordering on dangerous. I mean, taking of in first was a struggle at times - as in no power...

I moved to a 185hp 2.0 in a CC last summer and am an awful lot happier. That said, hearing nothing but good things in from the 1.4T 150hp petrol from VW. From the sounds of it based on your mileage, it's probably a great way to go. Unless hitting at the very least 20kkm+ diesel won't add up for you.

The newer 2.0 engines are said to be more reliable than the 1.6

Also definitely a lot more drivable. It's a no brainer for me IMO
