What sort of hiking activity are you looking at? If it is just a day walking in the hills then a 25-30 litre size should be sufficent. If it is a multi-day trip then a much bigger size would be needed. Multi day + camping and bigger again.

    Brand-wise:
    - Berghaus
    - Lowe-Alpine
    - Deuter
    - Osprey
    - NorthFace
    - Vango

The Live for the Outdoors website has gear reviews which may be of some assistance in choosing a rucksack, once you know the size and price range that you want.

Here's a pretty good one for starting out. I have one myself. Its 45 litres. I mostly do day hikes and i'd pretty much fill it once you get in everything.
