Young driver insurance

Hi so I'm just on here to let out my anger at insurance companies. I have he 14 lessons, passed my test first time, and have 1 year named experience on my aunts car. Now that I've passed my test the next obvious step is a car. I was originally planning on going on my moms insurance but no the insurance company won't put anyone under 25 on it (disgrace).

Which leaves me on my own now. I had planned on buying around 08-10 polo but the insurance was so high they said up the car budget and insurance will come down. My mom has kindly given me extra money to get a 2013/2014 polo. The insurance is still crazy. How can they still get away with this. I'm 18 years old and in school. I'm not working so where do they expect people to get €3000 for insurance for 1year??? I have rang every insurance company and brokers. A lot won't even take me because I need 3 years named driver experience which is bull because I can't do that because of my age. What do they want me on my moms car at 25y/o for 3 years.

Something needs to be done about this its stopping any young person from learning to drive. They were on red fm one day about this and I even rang in and spoke on air about it.

Well done on passing your test! :)

It is ridiculous, you are right. But it's always been that way. When I was 18 (8 years ago) that's how much insurance cost for most of my friends. My boyfriend is 25 and is a new driver. The quotes that he is getting are the same as you.

However, consider yourself lucky that you can even buy a car. Most 18 year olds can't afford to own their own car. When I was 18 I couldn't even afford to be added to my Mother's insurance. Do you really need a car at 18 years of age? If you can get money for a car surely you can get money for the insurance? After a few years no claims it will (hopefully!) be considerably cheaper.

Why not have your mam change insurance companies for one that will allow you as a named driver or why not just go for an 08/09 polo and get the insurance with the money saved over 13/14. Yes it's going to cost a lot to start with but getting your first policy under your own name is always pricey.

Yeah I need a car. We don't live in the city or anything so it is necessary really. I have also saved my money for a car I'm not just been given it. My mother just said she would give me some extra to get a newer car. I still need to pay the insurance my self.

I just think they have no incentives for people to start driving. The initial cost of driving lessons, insurance as named driver the test, theory test, eye test, fee for the permit and then insurance once you pass is still mad. I can understand while learning your high risk, when you passed though it should come down some bit. I just think there should be something done about this because it's not fair on any young drivers.

It's not just young drivers ,
It's learners of all ages and most people have had insurance increases across the board ,
No amount of moaning at 17 / 18 will change that unfortunately .

I'm in my mid 30s and I'm getting the same quotes.
So till we have a few years under our belts with and a decent no claims bonus we can only grit our teeth and curse the insurance industry

I was getting quotes of like €4.5k on a 1.6 litre from Liberty and Axa, TPFT @ 27/M learner permit with zero NCB (although 6+ years on a motorbike).

I have since found 2 places giving much more realistic quotes:

    €2,300 @ topquote.ie (via AXA)

    and

€1.500 @ boxymo.ie (NOTE: they required fitting a tracker to the car and are apparently very strict on modifications)

Thought I'd give you another option, considering the state of this "legal requirement" leading to lack of competition.

    Try boxymo
You get insured for kms not the whole year. I bought a car but have my mam as the registered owner and me as a named driver. For 16,000km (+ possible 3,000 bonus km) works out as €850

Boxymo seem to get an absolute bollocking on reviews,a quick google reveals countless horror stories, especially regarding mods, they're rejecting people because of tints apparently(and keeping the deposits).

I don't plan to get my own car or insurance until 25,since myself and my family can't afford a third car and the current car(s) are 1.9 diesels.

How does the system work for being named on someone else's policy? 18 yrs old fully licensed driver, will it be expensive? I plan to commute infrequently also, will this be allowed as a named driver?
