Just the back. But they cover both sides of the road.

This. Depending on the width of the road they can monitor vehicles going towards AND going away from them, but the camera only points out the back.

Surely that's a contradiction in itself. If the camera only points out the back, how does it capture a picture of something coming behind it.

Measures distance vs time - vehicle approaching or going away.

It doesn't detect cars coming from "behind" the camera. It detects the car as it passes the camera(travelling away from it), doesn't matter what direction the car is travelling in(towards or away from).

    Distance from where?

The OP asked if he could be detected while approaching the front of the van. Presumably then the answer is no, but he can be caught after passing the van but driving away from it.

Your position relative to the camera, it's rate of change is your speed.

So how does it detect your position if you are driving towards the front of the van. I think that's what the OP is asking. If the camera only points out the back then you will only be detected after you pass the van and drive away from it. Unless you are oblivious to it you will have slowed down by then.

It doesn't (unless it has a front facing device), it measures after you pass.

That's exactly what we just said? What part of this are you having trouble understanding?

I understand it perfectly. The first 5 posts, including yours, didn't actually answer the OP's question. Which part of it did you not understand.

Bull****. The first 3 words in the first answering post covered it. "Just the back".

Yes which was answered!! But you still seemed confused...

What a ridiculous question. The camera detects the car's speed as it passes and drives away It doesn't have to see anything coming from "behind". Jesus Christ.

I think there was a clue in the thread title.

First answer - just the back. Read it. Slowly.
