Wall Vent - Standard diameter?

Guys, short story, what is the standard diameter for piping in a wall vent?

Long story, noticed a dark area on the sitting room wall, checked the other side (external wall) and it turns out that the builders installed a vent outside, piped it, but failed to open it into the sitting room.

I opened it myself today, and the pipe (4" wavin) fell short of the internal wall by about 2". I extended the pipe, sealed it and the hole in the wall and put on an internal vent. Question is, what diameter should I have found when I opened it, is 4" standard, too big, too small?
