"Investing" in a job application

I've done an interview and task for a copyediting position and have been "invited" to attend a two-week 9-5 course to learn the publishers' formatting standards etc. (I also have to swot up on my vim, Ubuntu, and learn the background workings of Tex in advance, but these, and presumably the course, will stand me in good stead even if I don't get the job) The course is unpaid, but accommodation will be provided. I'll have to pay for my own flights to California, which are not going to be cheap unless I get very lucky. On the other hand, I would get to spend a fortnight in Berkeley. If I successfully pass the course, the job begins at $20 (~€18) an hour, and would allow me to work remotely, which is the main draw.
I've not yet decided whether I should attend or not. I'll have to email and see about logistics etc...

In general though, I'm curious ot know if boardsies ever make substantial "investments" to try get a job, and does it work out?
