What's the process for buying a new car? I'm a total noob in this area. I've almost done all my 12 lessons but I want to have my own car before I have my full license.

    - Do you pay a deposit on the car when your order it and pay the rest on collection?
    - Can you pay buy Visa Debit or Bank Draft instead of cash or is cash king in this situation?
    - How do you go about getting the license plate? Is that done for you?
    - Is there any other charges besides the the cost of car + accessories & delivery?
    - Are you able to tax and insure straight away?

I know the obvious answer is to go to the dealership and ask, but I don't want to embarrass myself for asking such silly questions. :D

    Thanks :)

Presume you're talking a brand new 161 instead of used.

    Yes

Not sure about Visa Debit, bank draft is the preferred method of paying the balance in my experience. "Cash" generally does not mean walking in with bags full of bank notes, but instead means a straight sale where you're not trading in another car

Registration of the new car is done by the dealer, they provide the registration number and plate. You need the registration number to sort out insurance before taking delivery and going on the road.
    - Is there any other charges besides the the cost of car + accessories & delivery?
Metallic paint is the only additional optional cost I can think of. Ask the dealer for the "on the road" price including whatever specification of car you want with all costs included.
    - Are you able to tax and insure straight away?
You have to insure before going on the road, this can be arranged when the dealer provides the registration number a few days before you take delivery. Call up the insurance company once you have the reg number and advise them the date and time you will be putting the car on the road and they'll start insurance from that time. Tax can be done online via www.motortax.ie usually a few days after the registration number is issued.

Good to have an idea before going to the dealer, but if anything comes to mind before closing the deal and paying the balance, ask the question and be happy with the answer :)

Hopefully you've thought this through, but is it such a good idea to buy a brand new car at this stage?

As an almost completely new driver there is an increased chance of doing something silly! And you'd be doubly gutted by even a small scratch on a brand new car. Also, the insurance will be very high.

You could think of getting a reasonably good second hand for present?

That said, good idea to ask the basic questions here, so the dealer won't see you as someone who could be messed around...
