I've two IP cameras, Vivotek ones which have sound. I want to install an NVR primarily so I can live monitor the cameras using the hdmi output. My question is, does the hdmi output of an NVR also carry the sound from the selected camera? Thanks

Normally no. There should be a separate audio out on the NVR.

Hikvision nvrs carry audio on the hdmi out.
Best to check the specs before you buy
