Terrible incident and loss of life on the Shannon this morning outside Limerick.
4am seem's a strange time to be on the river to me at least, going to be difficult to avoid any debris or as seen here to save yourself if something goes wrong.

Have known people to go fishing late at night, never thought people would be on lakes/rivers at 4am though..

    Mod:

Here is a link to an article.

Please do not speculate in this thread about drink/drugs being a factor.
I also don't want to see any specualtion about the circumstances of this incident.

Discuss what is known and has been released by the media.

    Thanks.

They nicked the boat, Kevo. Took it from a boathouse. That's the reason they were out at 4am. Dunno whether it was a drunken prank or a theft for profit.

Yeah, didn't want to accuse anyone but was thinking it was probably suspicious,Have the media reported this or is it just local information.

I heard it on the radio earlier this evening (either Newstalk or RTE, can't remember which).

Sad case all right. I had wondered what on earth they were doing in a boat at 4am in early february and has imagined it to be a cruiser of some sort. But then saw a picture of the boat, just a small row boat.

to be honest I reckon they have learned a far harder lesson that any comments made on the thread could do

Gardaí have begun an investigation into the death of Noel Quinlivan (28), who was found along with three other men suffering from serious injuries and hypothermia after a boat capsized in the river at around 4.15am.
The Marine Casualty Investigation Board (MCIB) also began an independent investigation.
Quinlivan was previously jailed for three years for knocking down a man while high on drink and drugs.
In February 2012, he admitted fatally knocking down father-of-one Thomas O'Shea after drinking alcohol and smoking cannabis.
Quinlivan pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of Mr O'Shea (40) on Main Street, Castleconnell, Co Limerick, in the early hours of September 6, 2009.
After the collision he went to his girlfriend's house, where he continued to drink alcohol and smoke cannabis.
In a victim impact statement, Mr O'Shea's widow Lisa, who was also injured in the collision, said she would never get over her loss.
"The laughter is gone from our house," she told the court.
Quinlivan was the last of the four men to be pulled from the water around 7am this morning.

Well given his history its possible drugs and alcohol were involved, possibly coming home from the pub or nightclub and a bit of high jinx involved.

3 years for a fatal hit and run? Anyone know what the equivalent sentence is in the United States? I remember one woman being sentenced to 50 years for a similar offence over there.

Sad story this but he lived his life on the edge.

it was initially reported that they were on a fishing trip. That's possibly what they told the emergency services. I did wonder if they were perhaps illegally netting fish but boat theft seems to fit the bill. It looked like an aluminium boat so probably would have been worth a fair bit. Four people in it at 4am, this time of year, flooded river Shannon is borderline suicidal.

There is one permanent cure, and one of their number got it.

Lads, until we get the official word from coroner etc, I'd lay off. He's not even buried, and family might be reading this.

Not saying I disagree, but let's hold off till the story is on legal paper.

The boat actually wouldn't be worth all that much (2K ish when new)especially as it was without an engine. I'd imagine the theft of the boat was to do something else (maybe fishing) rather than to profit from the boat. Also these boats can be giddy esp with 4 adults aboard. Cant imagine anyone of the 4 had much water experience or they would have known what they were doing was potentially fatal.

Its a reasonable size alu boat. I would think its worth 1.3 to 1.6K as it is. That's what I meant by a fair bit. They are in high demand for pike fishing and Linders etc are very expensive to buy new. Boats like that are light and make easy targets. If its fibreglass its worth less but it looks alu to me.
