Mac Book Pro wont start up - no startup disc

Was using my mac book fine on Monday night. Turned her on Tuesday evening and was only getting as far as the little bing she gives when you press the power button and then just got a white screen. Eventually I got an image of a folder with a question mark in it.

Googled around and found some help on Apple website but unfortunately I went through all the phases here and no joy.

Interestingly though, I couldn't see a start up disc on show when I got to the stage of repairing it.

I tried restoring from Time Machine Backup which I have saved on a separate WD My Cloud Hard Drive plugged into my WiFi Router. No joy here either.

I was thinking.... Is it possible to get my hands on a statup disc somewhere that might get me out of a hole?

No I just have the one Mac book and don't know anyone else with one.

When you say cable gone, do you mean loose? Could I open her up and take a look ?

If you google Clean Install El Capitan you will see how to create a bootable external drive. Download "El Capitan from the app store. When this is complete hold downtime option key and choose to start from the external drive. You need at least a 6GB USB key or bigger. You can then access the disk utility from the external drive. Google Clean install and there are clear instructions on how to launch 'terminal' as well as the exact command.

Had that same problem with white screen and the black folder with question mark!!!! It ended up that the hard drive had died. Thankfully I had a spare 2.5 inch hard drive to replace the dead drive and a USB copy of the lastest os x. I also had a time machine backup of which ment that I lost nothing...

This problem is caused by two things.
    1. Hard drive has died on you, which is fairly common.
    2. The connection cable between hard drive and motherboard is damaged!! Which can be a common fault with macbook made between 2008 and 2010?? I think??.

To anyone who owns a mac.. I recommend having a USB copy of ox x and a time machine backup, and back up regularly!! Otherwise to get your machine backup and running is a pain without the two items mentioned!!!!

I have time machine backup on a my cloud external drive. I tried installing from there, but obviously failed cause of my hdd being the way it is.

I'm getting someone to look at it for me tomorrow. Hopefully not to bad and at least I wil be able to restore from my time machine
