Help required: Virgin Media 360 / Compal Modem: Xbox One does not get proper speed

    Hi All,

I was looking for some help with an issue with Virgin Media 360Mbps (with the new Compal modem / Virgin Media Hub 3.0) and Xbox One.

I was hoping someone might be able to assist. I know the post may be long, but I have tried to include information about the issue and would appreciate hints or tips.

    Thanks,
    F.

    TL;DR Description of the issue:
The Xbox One does not seem to connect at the correct speed to take advantage of the 360Mbps connection

    More details
    • On 5GHz Wireless, the Xbox One detailed network stats shows 4-5Mbps download, 35-36Mbps Upload, 150ms Ping.
    • On a 2.4GHz connection, the Xbox One detailed network stats shows about 30-35 Mbps down, 30-35 Mbps Up, 150ms Ping.
    • On a Wired connection (Using Homeplugs, with Gigabit Interfaces, because the Modem / Router is too far away) the same page shows 6-9Mbps download, 35-36Mbps Upload, 150ms Ping.
-->The Wired connection, using the previous modem (UBEE) was able to show download speeds of ~150-180 Mbps on the Xbox One detailed network stats page.
The modem / xbox are one room apart in a 2000's era house, with plasterboard walls.

Note: The speed on the 2.4 GHz connection is probably about right for a WiFi connection, but I would prefer to take full advantage of the 360Mbps download speed and use the 5GHz or Wired connection for best performance, otherwise there's not much point paying for the 360Mbps.

    Troubleshooting performed:
Checked the NAT Type -->originally listed as Moderate. Added the Ports in the Port Forwarding on the Modem. NAT Type is now open, but the issue persists.
    • Checked the Connected Devices on the Modem / Router UI
-->on the Wired connection, this shows as 1000Mbps.
    • on the 5GHz connection, this shows as 270-300 Mbps
    • on the 2.4 GHz connection, this shows at about 70 Mbps
    • Checked the Wireless Signal settings
-->5GHz was enabled on Auto Channel select (116)
      -->I tried changing the frequency (20, 40, 80 MHz)
      >>20 and 40 had the same results, the xbox wouldn't connect with 80Mhz set.
    • Tried to run a SpeedTest (http://beta.speedtest.net doesn't require flash)
-->on the Wired connection this seemed to indicate 130Mbps down, 35Mbps up.
-->on the 5GHz connection, this had similar results (130 down, 35 up)
-->the 2.4 GHz connection was similar to the results on the Xbox Detailed Network Stats page.
-->I ensured that the Xbox One was the only device on the 5GHz network
-->The 5GHz is set to ac/n only (I can't set it to ac only, because the Xbox One doesn't connect at all then).
The main problem is that I believe that the Xbox Live reported connection is the more relevant one for things like Multiplayer gaming, Game Downloads, Netflix streaming (current VM and Netflix issues aside, I know there's a longer thread elsewhere for that), etc. This seems to be borne out by experience using the device

    Questions
Does anyone else have an Xbox One set up with the new Compal modem from Virgin?
What way do you have it configured?

Any and all advice greatly appreciated.

The only way for me to get my XBox work correctly was to put the Compal into Bridge mode and use my own router.

Thanks ... Unfortunately I haven't got an extra router to use.

It looks like it could be a problem with the Compal on 5GHz if you have it on anything other than ac only, some people have apparently had similar issues with other devices on the 5GHz mode. Unfortunately, I don't think the Xbox One has an Wireless ac network adaptor.

Networking Gigabit Ethernet, WiFi (A/B/G/N dual-band at 2.4ghz and 5ghz) includes WiFi Direct support [17]

XBone is too old for AC, you either slow down the rest of your devices or put it on 2.4Ghz with the rest of the legacy kit.

As latency is important I'd buy homeplugs and be done with.

    Thanks again for your assistance.

On a Wired connection (Using these Homeplugs, with Gigabit Interfaces, because the Modem / Router is too far away) the same page shows 6-9Mbps download, 35-36Mbps Upload, 150ms Ping.
-->The Wired connection, using the previous modem (UBEE) was able to show download speeds of ~150-180 Mbps on the Xbox One detailed network stats page

The 150ms is probably normal because the Xbox does it's internal speed tests against Xbox Live in Seattle, rather than locally in Dublin, but that doesn't explain the poor download speed (since the same Homeplugs connecting to the old UBEE got 150-180Mbps download speeds).

The issue seems less prominent if you completely power cycle the modem (plug it out for 30-60 seconds). Still not getting the speeds I should, but better than 5-10Mbps

Is there any chance you could plug directly into the router to eliminate the homeplugs. If its ok plugged directly in then the problem is with the plugs.

The ping is ok, I have FTTH and get 600-700mbps but still my ping never goes below 150ms

Unfortunately UPC placed the cable in the hall, so the modem is located there rather than beside the Xbox / TV so going direct would be out.

I would expect the Homeplugs to lose some of the speed - on the previous UBEE modem, 240 Mbps connection you would often get 150-170Mbps for the speed tests. With the new connection it's always fairly low on the Homeplugs.

If it would correctly sync up on the 5GHz wifi band, I would suspect that I should theoretically be getting a better performance than the Homeplugs. There are just so many variables with the Homeplugs, that I would like to bypass them altogether but can't be laying cable all over the house :)

having same issue for long time, since its hard to get cables across house once everything is settled. But if you use sat dish with tv,which i think most people do or some sort antenna, you could trace where original cable is coming from and trying to move the box into the room where your tv is located by un mounting cables from outside walls and relocating them closer to your room if there's enough extension.or buy smth like that

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/WHITE-VIRGIN-MEDIA-BROADBAND-EXTENSION/dp/B0074RZ1TC/ref=pd_sim_sbs_23_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=31OIF7KxktL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1CX4HF49XW275Y4GKEHQ

10m isn't long enough but i think its possible to find 20m or more and drilling couple holes up the ceiling to place your box where you want it.

since upgraded myself recently and only pump in wifi i got was 20mb.

What has a satellite dish got to do with UPC/Virgin?
