was driving along in a late 2002 opel vectra 2.0 dti when it ran out of diesel, managed to get pulled over off the road, stopped it the wouldnt start, I then put 15 euro diesel in it and churned it over, no start, got local guy from there with petrol car to try and jump start but no luck, left it there and back tomorrow to try and get it going so any advice before i go back up on getting it going appreciated, must say it did run out before on my brother as gauge is not the best but was always hard to start again but did start after keeping churning it over be no luck this time with me.

Might need to crack and injector or fill the fuel filter. Is there a primer bulb like the pic on the lines coming from the filter?

Easy start or a tow start might help either.

Diesel cars need to have the fuel system bled if you run out, you cant simply fill up and start until all air is removed from the system.
Do you have breakdown assistance on your insurance ?

You probably sucked up sludge/crap from the tank, it could be a good idea to tget the fuel filter changed

Fuel is taken from the bottom of the tank always, this sludge thing is an old wives tale. OP ran the tank dry and air locked the injectors. Simple.

Yeah the car got air locked but I've seen it on tractors and lorries when ran dry block the pipes and filters with debris that is in the tank.
When low the fuel has a tendency of sloshing about more in the tank bringing debris to the fuel pipe.
Sure if debris doesn't get sucked into fuel pipes why have a fuel filter
