I wonder with the price of oil going down, when will the ESB and other companies slash their bills.

Didn't they ask the regulator for a rise when the price of oil was on an upward spiral.

There was a recent decrease, but I wouldn't describe it as a slash. The wholesale price reduction can only influence the prices per electricity unit for customers. A big chunk of the bill is the fixed standing charge, which they have to have in order to maintain their infrastructure, and invest in it.

You might be able to save by switching providers. The biggest savings can be achieved by cutting out wastage. If you are a typical household there might be some lights on now where they are not needed, or a TV which nobody is watching. We also throw away €700 on average per household every year in food that we buy but then don't eat.

Just like the airlines hiked the price to compensate for fuel, they tell you it'll take years before it filter down and then it won't happen.

They buy it in futures so it'll be a long time before that filters down...

gas and electric prices have dropped by about 4% in the last 18 months I think

I dunno about a lot of you but about 30% of my average bill is VAT, Standing Charge and the green levy so the fall in oil has little impact!
