so now i have 2 machines that don't detect a network on wifi or wired to the modem

    pretty juvenile i admit

other than borrowing a laptop and down loading them is there anyway i can get my laptop connected through the wired route ?

I imagine you're doing this through your phone?
connect your phone to one of them and access the internet via it...;)

As part of the reinstall of windows 7,
it should install the drivers for network devices ,
eg wifi card ,and network ethernet device .
IF you had an android phone you go to hp support ,drivers download network ,
wifi ethernet ,eg download the device driver files to the phones, sdcard ,
then copy files to laptop using an sdcard reader,
My android phone is detected by my laptop ,.
if i plug it in via a usb cable .
maybe try bluetooth file transfer if the laptops have bluetooth .

I don,t know how iphones handle file transfers ,
i presume theres a way of plugging in an iphone to laptop,
using an iphone to pc file transfer app .
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ie/windows/setting-home-network#1TC=windows-7

maybe set up windows 7 file sharing folder .
    put driver files there .
post your laptop info here ,model no
    eg sony 650 , hp model 540t laptop .

    http://fileapp.com/
FileApp's document folder is accessible by both a Wi-Fi network connection and a high-speed USB connection. In the latter case, both iTunes File Sharing and our own iPhone file transfer software iMazing offers the ultimate in file sharing to and from FileApp
