Does anyone know what (if anything) the existing building/site will be used for when the Rotunda moves out to Blanch?

Hopefully still a maternity hospital. The blanch hospital is needed but we need to retain the services already in place. There is such over crowding in all there city maternity hospitals that even just moving to blanch will only scratch the surface of the problems.

I doubt that anything has been decided. There might be a need for some of it to be used as a primary care centre, but I can imagine a lot of it being put to non-medical uses.

The Adelaide Hosptial (Peter Street, not Adelaide Road) became apartments and offices (?) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adelaide_Hospital_(Dublin)

The Meath Hospital (Heytesbury Street, not Meath street) is still in medical use: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meath_Hospital

National Children's Hospital (Harcourt Street) became offices. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Children%27s_Hospital

The above all merged and moved to Tallaght.

The Coombe's original site became housing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coombe_Women_%26_Infants_University_Hospital

The logic of moving the maternity hospitals is largely down to them having limited space and services. While they can take a blood sample, they have to send it to another hospital for analysis. I can't see them being retained as maternity hospitals when births are expected to decline over the next 15 years.

I hope that something is done with it. I don't like to see stuff being moved out beyond the M50 and the city centre becoming emptier. The Luas will be running right past the front door which should help with access.

This isn't true, all three Dublin maternity hospitals have medium sized labs for analysing bloods, urine, tissue, etc. Not as big as James' or the Mater but bigger than the likes of St Michaels or the hermitage.

The NMH and the Rotunda need to move in order to expand to meet demand. All three need to move to provide immediate access to intensive care for adults. The NMH and Rotunda are both listed buildings so the buildings can't be changed much.

Apologies, I was told otherwise. But as you say, certain services are limited in the maternity hospitals.
