Switching from Virgin Media

    Hi,

I got the email from this crowd looking for an extra €5 per month bringing my monthly payment up to €75.

€75 for 60gb speed internet, about 70 or 80 TV stations (not horizon), & free anytime landline calls.

So, had a look around and there's an Eir bundle & a Vodafone bundle that are around the same price with alot more to offer.

Anyone have any experience with Eir or Vodafone bundles??

Plenty of threads on it already.

Eir and Vodafone line speed will depend on location. Eir TV is poor bordering on crappy and Vodafone dont have TV yet. So Vodafone + Sky costs more than VM.

    Thanks Ed.

I'm in Dublin 24 so am assuming the speed will be half decent.

According to this, vodafone are selling TV now...

when it comes to broadband in Ireland NEVER assume anything, regardless of your location.

Ooops, didn't realize it had launched.

Don't assume, check, there are premises in Dublin 2 that cannot get more than 10Mb. Cabling jobs done in the 70's and 80's play a big roll on what speeds VDSL allows today.

Also, with eir and vodafone be aware that SD TV takes about 6Mb from your broadband per set top and 8-10Mb per HD set top.

    This! ^^^

I used to live in a part of Drumcondra which couldn't even get good dialup speeds, let alone DSL broadband. Eircom said the lines were rotten and they couldn't (more like wouldn't) do anything.

Just wondering could we expand this thread a bit for anyone considering a move from VM to an efibre isp, just for say BB.

From searching around I think the 3 main contenders supply the following modem/routers.

    Vodafone HG658c modem
    Eircom F2000
    Sky hub 2.0 SR102

What I would like to know is
    a) do any support bridge mode (official or unofficial)
    b) do they supply an ipv4 or ipv6 wan address - if its an ipv6 address is there any issues with how its implemented
eg: do they use DS-Lite like VM
    c) if running in router mode, how good/bad is the firmware for configuring some of the extras the technical users would probably want
eg: port forwarding, firewall rules, vpn client/server, dnsmasq, DynDNS
    d) can you use an alternate device - I know it needs to support vectoring
    e) do the devices have enough grunt to handle the increasing loads being put on them
    eg: multiple devices, multiple sessions

    WW

    e) do the devices have enough grunt to handle the increasing loads being put on them
eg: multiple devices, multiple sessions Sky hub is terrible. 100Mb only on the Ethernet ports

The Sky hub sounds a bit ****ty, I would have thought it would either be decent, or they'd have an updated version, to cater for their Sky Q.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 621 ✭✭✭white_westie

My impression from reading about the the sky hub is that it's a bit crap alright...

Also forgot to ask, but are there issues with sky reactiving old eircom lines?
Have not had an active line for a number years now, but did have one with eircom/bt/vodafone before switching to upc.

I see some people talk about switching to Eir first to get an active line, and then trying to cancel in the cool down period and then trying to port to sky - not sure if that works!

Yes, Sky can't activate an old line or order a new one. I think Vodafone can but am not 100%.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

    Sky won't, not can't, they're too tight.

You can order a line with another provider, cease on day 2 and then wait a few and re-order with sky, but you're basically stealing €150 from eir or Vodafone. Whether that bothers you is up to you. The "honest" way would be to pay magnet for a contractless install then move after month 1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 621 ✭✭✭white_westie

On the ipv4 or ipv6 question, am I right in thinking that eircom are still giving out ipv4, but vodafone are not?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,411 ✭✭✭Avada

Eh, Sky both reactivate old lines and do New Line Provide...

The only caveat with them is that it must be a unique address (urban, not rural). They have been that way since about 2014.

Also, I can't quite remember why, but there are some issues regarding moving from Magnet to Sky. At least I think it is Magnet.

Was talking to Vodafone today (they rang me).
Checked my address (I am about 100m max from cabinet) and said I could get 85M on a stable profile, but should get 100M - is that correct?
Also said that while contract was for 18months the price was fixed for that duration, unlike VM.
Asked about modem and he said it was the latest and same as what they where sending out to the new lightspeed connections - I assume that's the HG658C box?

Can the 658c handle gigE? I would have guessed not but maybe.

If you chose TV with them you'll get 85, if you chose no TV then its 90 maybe 100Mb.

I doubt it's the one they use for FTTC . That's only 100Mb on the Ethernet and wifi maxes out at 50Mb on a full 100Mb connection on the VDSL.

So basically, they were talking BS about modem then!

Just for info, in a FTTH installation, is the fibre terminated externally and a gigpeed link patched into the house?

The fibre is brought inside the house and terminated in an ONT. If you search the eir FTTH thread, you should find pictures of an actual installation.

Same situation as OP - I have TV and broadband with Virgin Media. Received email saying bill was being upped by 5 euro a month (third year in a row this has happened albeit UPC beforehand) to 65 euro a month. I have been a customer for almost 10 years Chorus/UPC/Virgin.
Anyway, I decided to cancel my account.
I rang to cancel Virgin and a representative in cancellation department to sell me other stuff but I was firm and evetually she passed me on to "customer loyalty" department. They offered me same package for one year but discounted to half price (32.50) for first six months of that contract, 65 for second six months and thereafter. This amounts to 48.50 pm for the year. Just thought others might like to know.
Only concern is that he said he had no capacity to send me an email confirming this deal so we will see what the first bill brings!

They are legally obliged under the consumer directive to give you a considerable amount of information in a durable format if you order online or over the phone.

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/consumer_affairs/consumer_protection/consumer_rights/distance_selling.html

Anyway irrespective of the legal obligation no reputable business should have any difficulty in confirming details of an order with a customer. It is in everyone's interest to have such a record.

I just cancelled my TV/Broadband bundle with VM after receiving the price increase notification.

I live in Dublin 6 and am now looking for a broadband only package, but I don't want any more than a 12 month contract. Any recommendations?

Out of the big fixed BB providers, Sky are the only ones who provide fibre on a 12 month contract. Eir and Vodafone are 18 months.

Magnet also an option with the no contract option. Bit more expensive than Sky.

same for vodafone - do they resell Eir or BT?

    Both do both.

In non LLU its all eir as far as the operator.
    In LLU(less than 100 exchanges) Its Eir-BT-Vodafone and Eir-BT-Sky.

mine is LLU - dooradoyle exchange - guessing BT may have better infrastructure

Magnet have no contract but they're a bit more expensive and I think you pay for installation too.

Just to correct myself here after having a chat with Sky staff. They can activate a new line or reactivate an old one, but they only do it if you take their TV too.

Sorry for hijacking the thread but I'm thinking of moving away from Virgin myself.

I checked my address online and I'm in an apartment 80m away from a VDSL cabinet. Should I get close to 100Mb?

Yes in that range definitely. Moved from VM to eir recently. Big improvement on WiFi, Rte player, Netflix even though my speed is less.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

There's no real definitely. Check a neighbors number or your line might route the other way and hit a cab 1200m away.

    Add me to the list.

Sick of the sub-par service by VM lately so I've given my notice and intend to fight the cancellation fee, but I'll pay it if I have no choice.

Eir or Vodafone it seems, just not sure which one.

I'm thinking of switching from VM to Eir because of the Netflix issues on VM. I hate having to do it because I get amazing speeds with VM. The full advertised speeds.

Do Eir supply broadband in the same way? By that I mean will it just be a simple case of replacing the modem? No new lines needing to be installed? I've gotten the house all wired up for Ethernet and I don't want to change anything.

No, it's not the same. Eir use the phone lines whereas VM have their own cable infrastructure. So you'd need to have a landline or get one installed.

Damn. Guess I'm stuck with VM.
