Christian Radio & Television

Does anyone here listen to Christian radio or watch Christian television? I've seen some awful American preachers on EWTN but sometimes come across good stuff. I used to listen to UCB radio but haven't checked it out in ages. I recently listened to Spirit radio but at times they play secular songs which I found somewhat disappointing and they also use secular commercials, also disappointing. I suppose they have to fund the station, but still, I don't like the commercials. I find I'm not in any one place long enough to listen to a complete programme anyway. I have a strong faith, and don't really feel terribly tied to these stations really. Just wondering if anyone else tunes in regularly.

Not tuned into UCB in years. It got wishy washy in recent years and Spirit....well....George Hook is preferable.

I do watch the likes of Revelation TV occasionally.

Wishy washy? How do you mean? Music or interviews? Can't remember the last time I listened to UCB but don't remember thinking 'wishy washy' but presenters or music might have changed since then. I assume they still play a good mix of music. We would lean towards Redman, Townend, Hughes, Richards, Baloche, Tomlin, Brown style of thing. - but maybe that's wishy washy to the younger generation. But I also enjoy traditional church music as well so I'd guess you'd say I'm permanently in the middle of the road of Christian music and can fall either side of it.

Edit: I don't think I can access that Revelation TV anyway.

Haven't listened to any Christian radio station and I'd rarely watch enough tv to catch the programs. When I do get a chance to see tv, I like Andrew Wommack and Max Lucado. Max isn't on as often as I'd like and only does guest appearances, afaik.

I do read UCB's Word For Today which is an excellent devotional but I don't like Christian music.

I think the American style of preacher just doesn't suit me. When they get their congregations to start hugging each other I just switch off. It's way too sugary for me. I have watched Joel Osteen a couple of times but couldn't take more than five minutes. I couldn't live without music of one kind or another. My life would be very empty without it. I occasionally dip into the 'Word for Today' and it can be inspiring, I agree. I'm not locked into it, though I know some who wouldn't end their day without their nightly reading.

I tune in to Spirit Radio from time to time in the car. I'm not sure what the target audience is but sometimes it comes across as a college radio project - I'd like to see it come over a bit more professional/formal, but I guess we have the likes of UCB for that..

Used to listen to & enjoy Sunday half hour on BBC Radio 2 (when it was broadcast @ 8:30pm) back in the day, then they moved it to the ridiculous 6am slot, and that was the end of that

Spirit radio is alright I guess, but I'll never forgive them for taking over (both BBC Radio 2 frequencies) which means I can no longer listen to BBC R2 in the car :(

Never knew that they had done that. I listened a bit to Spirit yesterday evening in the car and again they played an ordinary pop song. I truly feel a Christian radio station should not play those. I feel Christians should be offering something different. I might check out UCB again to rate its wishy-washiness! :D

Yeah, I don't like many American preachers because a lot of them shout and jump around and seem to want to get the audience cheering. Not so with those two...

Joel gave you diabetes, did he? I don't think he actually refers to himself as a preacher: I've heard he describes himself as a life-coach, motivational speaker, etc; but not actually as a pastor of his mega-church. His emphasis seems to be on what God can do for you: make you happy, rich, prosperous, positive, blah blah blah.

Do you rather the type who shout about how you're a sinner who's going straight to hell unless you keep attending his church to give him money?

I rather enjoy watching EWTN: the daily masses, the programs from around the world showing the global community and the occasional classical music pieces.

I really like Spirit radio. A greatly positive station in a sea of negativity.

As great as some of the Christian music on Spirit is, it does get grating after a while. There is nothing wrong with playing secular songs every now and again. As a young person I like to hear those songs so maybe that's why they're playing them :)

Hi Parachutes. The problem I have with the secular songs on Christian stations is that those songs were probably never meant to have a Christian message in the first place. It might have a sentiment that is in line with Christian teaching, and it might not but I don't think we should confuse the two. To clarify, a secular love song is usually about love between two people whereas Christian songs are about the love between God and His people. Just my opinion, for what its worth.

EWTN is very good for the most part.
Father Mitch Pacwa's programme in particular is always interesting.

I like to listen to the music on the American broadcasts but like others here I have to admit that the preachers just don't engage me for some reason. Their sermons are too commercial for my liking.

Isn't there the God Channel too? Maybe I should search for that one as well.

Good Songs of Praise on BBC1 yesterday, with quite a lot of reference to the late Terry Wogan, who was ironically an atheist since the age of seventeen.

Yeah, it's on Sky, channel 580. Daystar is on Sky too, channel 583.

Spirit FM radio station has confounded the broadcast media industry with the number of listeners it has.

An Irish Christian radio station operating on a miniscule budget has a large and growing listenership according to today's Indo newspapers

But as I already mentioned, Spirit has quite a mixture of Christian and secular stuff, commercials etc., which probably makes it more like a mainstream broadcaster. Maybe most people like that but I don't.

Good coverage of the Popes visit to Mexico on EWTN
I like the prayers and reflections in between the programs
    I love The Journey Home
There's such a lot of rubbish on TV it's s break to watch a bit of EWTN

I do enjoy Spirit. Their playlist is quite small though.

The house was quiet tonight so I spent time knitting and listening to UCB for the last hour and 20 minutes or so. I think one programme was Celtic Praise which was brilliant, really enjoyed it, and then there were a few preachers and some teaching which was very interesting. Earlier today I switched the TV over to the God Channel and Joyce Meyer was on, I switched it off immediately. I didn't like her 15 years ago, and I still don't like her style of 'preaching'.
