    Dia daoibh,

I was thinking of studying Commerce with Irish but I just looked at timetables and I see the emphasis is put on the commerce. I'm an Irish enthusiast and I was wondering if any student studying this subject could let me know about the standard of Irish learning.

If you are studying Gaeilge through arts I would like to hear how many hours are done a week.

    Go raibh maith agaibh!

You could always do a diploma alongside your degree. NUIG lets its students do a part time diploma in Irish for a nominal fee (€200) where you study a few hours a week over 2 years. I did it and was happy out with it.

Thanks for your help. The thing is I want a degree in Irish,so a diploma wouldn't be enough, I want to see what would allow me to specialise in Irish and the Commerce Degree seems to neglect Irish.

    Dia duit,

I'm currently doing Arts, with Gaeilge being one of my subjects.

You have 5 hours a week - 2 lectures and 3 hours of tutorials (depending on your standard of Irish you'll be put into a group that has a straight 3 hours of tutorials or a group that has one 1 hour tutorial a week and one 2 hour tutorial.

The emphasis is mainly put on literature and the grammar that you're taught is very basic.

On the other hand, you can do Léann an Aistriúcháin as a subject which focuses mainly on grammar with one or two modules focusing on ''the history of translation' or 'aspects of translation''

If you want anymore information on Gaeilge in NUI I'd be happy to help :)
