Not doing racing so I need a spare set for sportives, club spins and the odd commute. What would you suggest as the best all rounder at an affordable price online or otherwise

What are your current wheels and how much do you intend to spend?

Bontrager race ready wheels as standard on a Trek Madone. About 150-200 budget max. Also the these Bontrager wheels are still going strong. Its just so I have a back up set when the inevitable happens and they need to be replaced i.e spokes breaking, not being true etc etc.

Mavic Aksiums, have a pair this couple of years, given them dogs abuse, they have been flawless.

I had Shimano R501's on my main commuter for several years. Never popped a spoke or went out of true despite a lot of abuse on dark unlit roads all year round.

Special offer of €98 at the moment on CRC.

I had constant trouble with spokes on the Aksiums.

The fulcrum racing 7 is a great wheel.

I have the older model badged as a 77. The 2016 model is meant to be even better.

Fulcrum 7s or 5s if u can afford them or Shimano rs30s,
Mavic aksiums have been hit or miss for me, but over all good value and bar a couple of spoke issues Id still get them if price was right.

+1 for Shimano R501s. I've them on my commuter a year or so now and never had any issues. I got mine in a CRC deal around 75 Euro - or the cost of getting 3 spokes replaced here (Zurich) so it was a no brainer for me

    Campy Khamsins or Scirroco 35's.
Think the Khamsins are on special on Planet X or Ribble or somewhere like that.
Both easy to service and pretty bombproof.

DT swiss make some pretty good wheels. I think the R23 is supposed to be decent, and DT swiss hubs are generally great maintenance wise. I reckon the best value wheelset maybe is the Mavic Ksyrium elite. It's kind of a hybrid of Aksium and Ksyrium SL, so it could be a good wheel for races/sportives, but can take a beating as well. I guess it's not exactly entry level, but worth looking around anyway to see if there are good deals.

I have a set of these that I bought from Merlin about 4 years ago Tiagra hubs on Mach rims
The most bombproof wheels I've ever had - super durable rims and excellent hubs

    Highly recommended

you won't beat Mavic Aksiums. even Zonda's recently were 325 on ribble with gatorskins.

Zondas are superb, but they are about 200 quid above bargain basement wheels tho. Best value/per quality wheel around tho in my opinion.

    +1 on the askiums

Bombed around on them for years, and only retired when I messed the rim after an accident. Stayed true and was able to pump to low pressure and get myself home.

I wouldn't touch mavic askiums again, great for 6 months and hen constant issues before the bin. I've done big miles on shimano rs501 and still perfect, for less than 100 hard to beat.

Shimanos 501 are cheap. Rim wear is my only issue, especially in the wet, with all the crap on the roads. Mostly commuting every day 50km.

You can usually get a set on CRC for €110 in their sales. Keep your brakes and rims clean in winter time.
