Down to that time of year again.Mid March lambing flock here...first lambs always come around 15th March, majority lamb in rest of March.

Time to vaccinate, think I used Covexin 10 last year.
A careful neighbour was saying to me the other day he is going using Heptavac P Plus this year as its meant to cover some of the pneumonias ewes lambing indoors can get.
Will be lambing some of ewes in so might follow his lead.
What are other people using this year and why....(question only applies to those who follow a vaccination programme).

I always vaccinate the lambs then when tailing them and giving them their first worm dose at about 6/7 weeks of age.

    Thanks for any replies.

We're getting some sordelli here so have to use covexin 10 as the heptavac doesn't cover it, but covexin doesn't cover Pnuemonia so we use ovipast as well.....Intensive farming intensifies problems !!!!!!!!!!!

We use Heptavac P Plus for all our indoor and outdoor ewes. 4 - 6 weeks pre lambing.

Thanks for replies, will go with the Heptavac P Plus.

Do people find that even though ewes were well covered(as mine would be) you will get an odd healthy lamb dying at about 3 weeks of age?....can be very frustrating:(.....lost a few lovely Cheviot ewe lambs last yr.....the usual story...its always a good one that goes.

What do people put it down to?.....and it might not even have been after a frosty night.

Braxy is also called frosty grass , bit I don't think it applies to young lambs that wouldn't be grazing. Frost is able to damage the intestine and bacteria starts to grow and turns to sepsis.
Have your ewes ever got the proper initial vaccination treatment, ie two vaccinations six weeks apart.....if they don't get that when they're young, the annual vaccination will not be as effective.....anyway you should really bring dead ones to the lab in case the ewes are vulnerable

We've had big healthy strong lambs from 4 weeks of age, getting plenty of milk and concentrates, then you find them dead in the field. The vet put it down to Pulpy Kidney.

Apologies for caps:).....unfort due to circumstances won't get to inject ewes until next Sat 20th.Ewes will be lambing from Paddys day but you always get 5 or 6 that lamb from around the 15th March.
Using Heptavac P Plus.Says to do them 4 to 6 weeks pre lambing.

Is that a bit tight for comfort timescale wise for immunity to build up in lambs do people think.
All other years would have them done 6 weeks out but different things competing with time at mo....joys of part time farming!
    Glad to hear any feedback.
From 20th March it is 26 days to 15th of march for example when first few lambs usually appear.

Covexin 10 is between 8 and 2 weeks before lambing.
I also think Covexin 10 is the same as heptavac P

Open to correction on the last statement...

I use Covexin 8, cheaper, don't have any issues with lambs dying so will keep using it. Injecting next Sat for lambing around 17th same as yourself.

Which of them can you buy in the smallest pack ? I've only 20 ewes and will end up wasting the bottle once it's opened .
I hAve last year's still in the fridge but it's not worth taking the chance if it's dead

Both Covexin 10 and heptavac P are available in 50ml sizes.

Lambing here from the week of Paddys Day. Is it too late to vacinate them this Saturday?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,803 ✭✭✭Bleating Lamb

Any feedback possible from people that use Heptavac P Plus over last few years?

Should ewes be ok cover wise been done a month out or a little less than a month out from lambing?

I think you will be fine...my problem is I have to leave it till Sat week to do mine...which leaves it just under the month for the first few ewes that would lamb.

We usually vaccinate towards the end of this month with first lambs due in early April

Bringing the thread up to date........so my lambs are born from paddys day on with majority born by april 10th.....im going vaccinating lambs soon and want to know whats best or what do you guys use

The cost of covexin 10 is 200 euro approx to do 250 lambs and heptavac p will be 240 to do the same number so an extra 33 cent per lamb (wont break bank) but was i better going with the protection against pasturella or the sordelli with covexin

    Thanks for opinions
