    Just kinda thinking out loud.

Thinking of treating myself as I'm fed up of slumming. Would like a Lexus Hybrid, and wondering if anyone has any opinions on which would be a better purchase.

    A 2007 GS450h like this one.
    Or
    A 2007 RX400h like this

RX will be slower and handling will be worse because of its size. RX better for height and driving position, which might be important for some people.

Depends what you want or prefer really, one is a saloon and the other a SUV. GS will have far superior performance while the RX might be more practical.

Boot in GS is abysmal... Really, not useful for anything but a purse.

    thanks guys.

Not overly interested in high driving position, although it is nice the odd time I drive the parents' Santa Fe. Probably shouldn't compare an RX to a Santa Fe!

Would I be right in assuming that the GS is newer technology? Since it's a more frugal 3.5 as against the RX's 3.3?

Would never have noticed that. This is why I asked on Boards!

I bought an RX400h a year ago, it's very comfortable and practical. I do like the GS too but I couldn't live with the tiny boot, it's a very fast car in a straight line though. The RX isn't slow either, more than enough real-world power imo. Fuel consumption isn't bad all things considered, my best was 8.1 l/100km (35mpg) from a full tank, can go over 10l/100km though. The GS is slightly better on paper but you'd probably be driving it a bit harder. Tax is a hoor on both of them. Either of them should be bullet-proof reliability wise.

The GS450h over an RX every day. Up until 08 I got to drive all models of new cars that came into the country bar Volvo, Citroen, Alfa, Renault and any supercars. The GS450 was as refined as the class above with the straight line speed of machines that were well over 100k. Think there was a vrt/tax break at the time so a load of them were about as far as I can remember.

    Thanks for the info lads.

Was the GS updated around '08, or is the difference in price purely down to the tax?

    Tax only. 2008 is €750/year, 2007 is €1809/year.

Hey Soarer, I recently bought a GS300. I drove the RX and GS hybrids before I bought mine, I really liked them both, fantastic cars and ultra smooth drive. They come with all the toys as standard, the fit and finish is excellent on them, and reliability is very good too.

I didn't buy the GS450h as I would need the boot space - the boot in them is really small. But they are an amazing car to drive, straight line speed really is phenomenal, and they are very relaxing to drive. The one in your link looks great. If you can live with the small boot, go for it.

I liked the RX too, again great to drive and the fuel consumption is excellent despite the size and power. I just didn't want to go down the SUV route, been there done that, and just preferred a saloon. Different strokes for different folks and all that.

Good luck with your decision. They are both a lot of car for the money.

All pre-08 GS450s seem to be top spec but there are some lowish spec 08s out there. They're missing sat nav, cooled seats, adaptive cruise control to name a few. Also 08s get a slightly updated interface on the touch screen system.

    Thanks Zizou.

o does that mean that all pre 08 models have what you've listed above ie. xenons, adaptive cruise, cooled seats, etc.?

The boot is crap but at least it fits a large golf bag (if that's your thing).
