I saw that from the Luas this morning, never saw anything like it before. I thought it was part of an aurora but there was no mention of any solar flares lately.

    Hi smacl,

    Great picture!

The image shows nacreous clouds (also called Polar Stratospheric Clouds) which we have been lucky to see the last couple of mornings. Best explanation I can post is that from Les Cowley's atmospheric optics site ... links are below:

    http://www.atoptics.co.uk/highsky/nacr1.htm

    http://www.atoptics.co.uk/highsky/psc1.htm

http://www.spaceweather.com/ also has info on them and a link to a gallery of images from observers this week.

Congratulations on seeing them. We may see the clouds again tomorrow morning and you should look anytime from say 7am onwards.

    John

Yes, I saw those on Monday and Tuesday mornings on the walk to school. They were more visible this morning. I described them to my daughter as being like frozen rainbows.

Sorry to answer to your beautiful picture with this, but I tried to "copy" as before and failed miserably. :(
