Just curious if anyone knows how many kilometers would someone expect to get per litre of petrol. The car I have is a 1.4 litre engine

Really depends on the car and whether you are around town or on the motorway but between 10-15 kilometers per liter as a guideline for that engine size.

Don't go inventing a new system. Use litres/100 km (or if you must, miles/gallon.
Manufacturers value*1.5 might be a good start.

Quite a reasonable figure for that car.

Urban areas, getting around 7.5/100L in a 2008 1.9 BMW petrol

Goes under 5/100L on the motorway / decent N road.

Wait, you're at less than 5l/100km on the motorway in a 2 litre petrol BMW?? Are you sure?

With cruise control on, yep. Not much under 5l, but the needle sits to the left.

Oh the analogue reading in the dial of the bmw's?
    Forget that for accuracy :)

Do the math, i was wondering how you thought it was doing 55-60mpg :D

Yeah, I got that consistently from my old diesel!

If I reset the MPG on the motorway, its not that far off.
However, the dealing with traffic and getting to and from the motorway will push it back towards the 7 mark :(

    We had a 1.4 almera that did 44-47 for 80k miles 60% rural 10% urban 30% motorway.
Replaced that with a 1.4 focus POS that did 37mpg average as bad as 34mpg at 130km on the motorway driven the same way by the same people. Our neighbour had the same engine with equally bad results. He changed to 1.6 and mpg was far better.
Replaced that with my dads 18 year old 1.6 carina estate that does 36-44mpg.

If you want a good idea look at http://www.spritmonitor.de/en/ and search for your exact vehicle set a minimum number of recorded kilometers to 15000 and you get a very accurate picture especially the mileage histogram on the right.

Some people keep detailed record you can see mpg on motorway, rural, town, high speed, air con on, cold weather etc.

You a good idea of the average e.g.:
    1.4 focus histogram gives 38mpg
