Not really sure where I am going with this question - but if a club organised timed runs on a certified course and you participated would your result be an official pb?

If you are an elite athlete looking for qualification times to major championships then no. If not then yes. A PB is a PERSONAL best, so if you are happy it is legit then it is up to you to make the call.

Unless you are a sprinter, in which case, the timing should be fully automatic. People claiming hand times as PBs in events so short is ridiculous carry on IMO. 800m and up it doesn't matter much.

Thanks - I am no elite athlete ! I was just moaning the lack of 10ks ( at a time suitable for me around marathon training and social life and kids social lives) . I am keen to take advantage of current fitness levels to pb so I thought maybe if I can't find suitable race I will organise my own race - then started to wonder if I actually could! A race without other people who would expect chipped timing or goody bags or teeshirts or teeshirts or whatever . Then it occurred to me that you could probably have timed run with an independent timekeeper at the end using a certified course. Not sure exactly how you would find the course start and finish lines on country roads though ! It could be a club competition like a mile trial . I was thinking you could use a track but then dismissed it as it wouldn't be proper road running and a pb would be too easy!

Using a track would be the most legit option available to you. Run 25 laps and you have exactly 10k right there. Simple. Boring as boring can get, but simple. :)
