Adding a waistcoat to a suit...

I'm relatively new to wearing a suit for work, so my wardrobe is starting to grow a bit now.

I was wondering if its possible to add a waistcoat to a suit (single breasted)

The suit colours i have at the moment are charcoal, a kind of dark grey and a dark blue.

What colour waistcoat should I be looking at?

If you're adding a waistcoat to a suit you already have, make sure that you're going for something contrasting. Don't try and 'match' the suit as it'll just look wrong.

A grey waistcoat can look really well with a navy suit but you just have to be very careful, especially with textures. Contrasting a waistcoat is a move that requires a fair bit of confidence, and depending on your industry, it might just not work.

Odd waistcoats are a tricky look to pull off OP. Your best bet is to get a three piece suit to begin with but if you haven't, as B&C said do not under any circumstance try to wear one in the same colour of the suit.

Just throwing this out there also - it would be much easier to layer a very thin merino v neck jumper under the suit for a similar, but much easier to pull off look. Two colours to start with would be a pale grey (if you wear navy suits) and maybe a light to mid green. Navy would be very nice if you wear mostly grey suits but don't try to wear a navy jumper with a navy suit.



One caveat - go a very fine wool like merino or if you can afford it, cashmere. Cotton jumpers have a place in a mans wardrobe but only as casual spring/summer wear.

You're heading down a very dodgy route here. Can I ask why in particular you want to wear a waistcoat with an existing suit, rather than a 3 piece suit?

Waistcoats wouldn't be at all prevalent in the Irish workplace, so just curious as to why.

If you want something different, I'd suggest looking at a double breasted suit.

That's a tweed waistcoat. Wearing it with (I'm assuming) a worsted wool suit would be a major faux pas.

In my old job i used to always wear a 3 piece and always had the waistcoat not matching the suit and i always used to go for wild coulors like i had a dark grey with a navy suit. A plan grey with a tartan style suit and so on.

All depends then on there shirt your wherein under it i used to love pokeadot shirts then a good tie.

I am very bold with what i wear and the amount of compliments i used to get for my suits was suits as i stood out big time. People stopped me on the sts asking me where did i get the suit ?. I made river island or asos clearance look like it cost 10 times that as i got everything fitted after i bought it.

Now i wear jeans, and a jumper in work and bold jumpers again and get compliment for my work wair again. I am going to be in a office with a few 100s other people might as well stand out.

Yes but you didn't need to ask on boards for advice about what waist coats.

This is not criticism of OP but more bold clothing choices only look good when the wearer is confident and has above average knack for matching colours, shapes and patterns. Once you have to ask you probably are not the right person for it. (I'm not).
