I got an Xperia Z3 on Vodafone contract through work mid last year but I put the Sim in my own G4 and never use the Sony.
My Dad has a G2 that is on its last legs and I want to give him the Z3. He has a Vodafone contract also and the Sim would work, but will vodafobe lock the phone when they detect a different Sim card/phone number to the original one?

No, they won't. Why do you think people sell network locked phones, including shops like CeX? Any SIM from that network will work.
