where are you on the ladder

Think of a ladder as representing where people stand in society. At the top of the ladder are the people who are best off—those who have the most money, most education and the best jobs. At the bottom are the people who are worst off—who have the least money, least education and the worst jobs or no job. The higher up you are on this ladder, the closer you are to people at the very top and the lower you are, the closer you are to the bottom. Where would you put yourself on the ladder? Choose the number (1-10) whose position best represents where you would be on this ladder.

    - got this question asked when answering a paid survey, and never though of where I am. To be honest I have a quite reliable job, place to live (even though I don't own it), I am quite healthy and don't have many problems, so even though I don't have any savings I'd like to think I'm very lucky considering what other people have

What do you think? Where are you on the ladder?

I honestly care nothing for estimated status. I have a very high education but rarely worked due to chronic illness.. Live in rented accommodation and live snug and content in the free and peaceful countryside, both literally and figuratively as far from society's values and assessments and imaginary ladders as is possible. My priorities are simple; to do and give as much as I possible can to others and to live as simply as I can.

Interesting question. A few years ago I think I would have been "higher". Great job, travel with work, plenty of disposable cash, double income and no children etc

Then I gave up that job to try my hand in an industry I love but which is pretty difficult to make a living in. Long story short, just before I went into business myself, I got pregnant, so put that on the long finger. It's still on the long finger and I'm now working for pittance, but doing a job I love. I get to spend every day with my one year old.

So on a ladder of how others might view things, I've dropped from 5 to maybe 2. On a ladder of my own happiness I've gone up a few rungs. Very lucky to be able to say that I love my life at the moment.

Bar the very bottom and top of the ladder, isn't the middle somewhat of a grey area where it is down to perception.

What I consider is a good wage could be completely different to someone else's,also the same goes for happiness and somewhere nice to live.

Real answer - impossible to answer without a more detailed description of what each rung of the ladder means.

Where would somebody be who has a good job making good money but is only on a term contract which will end in say 2 years, after which they could be unemployed again?

I've been up on the fcuking ladder in the foundering snow and hail and sleet and wind all morning. :(

The top of the ladder is not always a better place.

I am well educated to PhD, had a good job, have a great pension and enjoying life. Where on the ladder? Not a notion, as I don't know what the measure for each rung is or how every other person is situated.

Job title would put me towards the bottom in most people's eyes.

Nett pay-what actually matters-puts me right up there.

You know those slapstick comedy sketches where someone is carrying a ladder, turns around too quickly and whacks their friend in the head? Then turn the other way and whacks them in the back?

I'm the one that gets GBH'ed by the ladder.

At the top of the ladder are the people who are best off

The ladder can be terrible deceptive...

Dave Smith is on his death bed and knows the end is near.
His nurse, his wife, his daughter and 2 sons are with him at his home in London.
He asks for 2 independent witnesses to be present and a camcorder be in place to record his last wishes.
When all is ready he begins to speak:
"My son, Bernie, I want you to take the Mayfair houses."
"My daughter, Sybil, you take the apartments over in the East end."
"My son, Jamie, I want you to take the offices over in the City."
"Sarah, my dear wife, please take all the residential buildings on the banks of the Thames.
"The nurse and witnesses are blown away. They did not realize the extent of his holdings.
As Dave slips away, the nurse says to his wife, "Mrs. Smith, my deepest condolences. Your husband must have been such a hard-working and wonderful man to have accumulated all this property…………..
"Property?”, Sarah Smith replies. “He had a window cleaning round."

Yeats got me right: I am where I can only be and its the only place where personal truth is found.

"I must lie down where all the ladders start
In the foul rag and bone shop of the heart"
